Quando eu "for grande" quero fazer bolos como estes :-), mas ainda tenho muito que aprender e nada como fazê-lo com quem sabe!

Gostamos de aproveitar o que Lisboa tem de melhor: a luz, a Baixa, as exposições e alguns eventos imperdíveis. Passeamos sem horas e sem destino e, de repente, mesmo em frente aos nossos olhos, ou debaixo dos nossos pés, há detalhes que nos deixam felizes :-)

We like to enjoy the best Lisbon can provide us: the light, the Centre, the exhibitions and also some events. We wander around without worring about shedules or destinations, and suddenly small details that make us happy are right in front of our eyes or under our feet :-))

pequeno almoço * breakfast

Durante a semana ando sempre a correr, mas quando chega o sábado (ou um feriado!) faço questão de tomar o pequeno almoço com mais calma para começar bem o dia! :)

Entre outros sabores, hoje preparei também uma taça de iogurte natural caseiro com flocos de aveia, mel do Alentejo e frutos vermelhos que comprei no mercado de produtos biológicos no Jardim do Príncipe Real.

A vista é sobre esta bela Lisboa que se estende a meus pés a cada olhar, a cada instante, radiante e misteriosa. De tudo o que esta cidade oferece, o que mais gosto continua a ser a luz, que me cativa todos os dias, quando chove e quando está sol, de Verão e de Inverno. :)

  

During the week I am always in a rush, but when Saturday comes (or a holiday!) I usually have a slow breakfast to start the day in a good way :-)
Among other flavours, today I  prepared a bowl of homemade yoghourt with oatmeal, honey from the Alentejo and some berries I bought in the organic products market  in the Jardim do Príncipe Real. And nothing better to add to my breakfast than this view of wonderful Lisbon out of my window. Above anything else, my favourite thing about Lisbon is the light and the brightness no matter the weather conditions: rainy in the Winter or sunny in the Summer.

Escrever * Writting

Escrever nunca foi o meu forte, e sempre foi muito mais simples fazer um desenho, mas sempre tive um fascínio por máquinas de escrever. Hoje em dia, com a evolução tecnológica as máquinas caíram em desuso e passaram a servir de decoração.

Talvez porque o meu trabalho gira em torno da inovação, tecnologia e software, sinto cada vez mais a necessidade de equilibrar os dias com elementos de "slow living", e até porque gosto de um toque vintage - e fica bem, claro! E foi com essa necessidade, e da vontade de aprender a dactilografar à antiga, que no dia 6 de Novembro saí de casa em direcção à feira da ladra à procura de uma máquina de escrever. Depois de ter conhecido uma espanhola e um peruano simpatiquíssimos, de ter passado o dia a falar espanhol e com algumas peripécias pelo meio, vim para casa com a minha Singer de teclado HCESAR. Partilho um vislumbre da máquina no dia seguinte de a ter comprado (ainda por limpar).

Writing was never my calling, and has always been much simpler to make a drawing, but I always had a fascination with typewriters. Today, with continuous technological developments they have fell into disuse and came to serve as decoration.

Maybe because my job turns around innovation, technology and software, I feel increasingly the need to balance my days with "slow living" elements, and also because I like a vintage touch - and it looks good, of course! It was with this need, and willingness to learn typing as our mothers used to, that on November 6th I left home towards the flea market looking for a typewriter. After meeting very nice couple from Spain and Peru, and having spent the day speaking Spanish and some adventures in between, I finally came home with my Singer typewriter with a HCESAR keyboard. I share a glimpse of the typewriter took on the next day I have purchased it (still needing a cleaning).

*Presentes de Natal* *Christmas Presents*

A partir de hoje e até dia 20 de Dezembro todas as compras feitas na nossa loja serão enviadas devidamente embrulhadas, prontas para serem abertas no dia de Natal.

Quem quiser encomendar t-shirts terá de se apressar, pois só recebemos pedidos até dia 8 de Dezembro.

From today until the 20th of December all the items from our shop will be sent to buyers beautifully wrapped, ready to be opened on Christmas Eve.

*Quilt sandwich: Mix & Match*

Seguindo a primeira ideia que tinha e o conselho de algumas leitoras, optei por usar polar na parte de trás, para o tornar mais quentinho, mas esta não é de todo uma solução fácil. Para além do facto de não conseguir comprar este material a metro, em Faro, as mantas que encontrei em cores que me agradavam não tinham tamanho suficiente para cobrir toda a área, assim, tive de acrescentar uma tira usando alguns dos tecidos do topo, para que o tecido "esticasse". E resultou!

Tenho ainda algum trabalho pela frente com o pespontar, fazer o debrum e cosê-lo. Mas sim, vai ficar pronto antes do Natal :-)))

Following my first thought and the advice given by some of our readers, I chose to use polar fleece to back this quilt, to make it warmer, but this wasn't an easy solution. Not only I couldn't buy the material by the meter, but also all the blankets I liked weren't wide enough, so I had to add a strip of patchworked fabrics from the top to make the polar fleece to "stretch". And it worked!

I still have some work ahead, like quilting and binding but I believe it should be finished before Christmas :-)))

*Eco-friendly shopping bags*

Há muito que os sacos reutilizáveis entraram nos hábitos lá de casa. Começámos com os de compra e também costurámos alguns; actualmente andamos sempre com um ou dois no carro, de tamanhos diferentes sempre prontos a usar.

E como eles não são difíceis de fazer, que tal aderir à "moda"?

It's been a long time since we started using eco-friendly shopping bags. At first we bought some and then we startes sewing a few others; usually we carry a pair of different sizes in the car, for whenever they are needed.

And as they are not difficult to make, what about following this trend?

*Homemade (sort of) Nutella*

Para os queques que fiz no Sábado precisava de algo que não tinha em casa: Nutella! ... não tinha, nem nunca tenho, pois é coisa que não se consome aqui, como tal resolvi fazer uma dose :-) A receita está ali em baixo, mas à falta de avelãs eu usei nozes.

For the muffins I made last Saturday I needed some Nutella which I didn't have at home -well, I never have it! - so I had to make a small portion of it :-) The recipe is below the picture and the only difference to what I made is that I used wallnuts instead of hazelnuts.

Receita:

90 grs. de açúcar em pó

130 grs. de avelãs moídas

60 grs. de chocolate de culinária ralado

70 grs. de manteiga à temperatura ambiente

100 ml. de leite

Leve os ingredientes ao lume em banho maria e mexa bem com uma vara de arames até ficar tudo bem ligado. Guarde num frasco previamente esterelizado e conserve no frigorífico.

Recipe:

90gr of icing sugar

130gr of finelly grinded hazelnuts

60gr of grinded dark chocolate

70gr of sbutter at room temperature

100 ml milk

Put all the ingredients in a bain marie bowl and stir until well combined. Stir it into a jar and keep it in the fridge.

*A preparar o Natal* *Getting ready for Christmas*

Parece que o Natal ainda está longe, mas num instante estamos lá, e é por isso que cá em casa o começamos a preparar com alguma antecedência...que nunca é sudiciente! Papel de embrulho, fitas, embalagens...só faltam os duendes do Pai Natal para isto parecer uma verdadeira oficina :-)

Christmas may seem ages away but it's right around the corner and that's why we try to get everything ready as soon as we can, even thought it's vever too early... Wrapping paper, ribbons, packages...the only thing we haven't got are Santa´s dwarfs to make home look like a real workshop :-)

Não para o Natal, mas para o lanche, fiz uns queques que estão deliciosos :-)))

*Quilt top: mix & match*

A parte mais fácil já está terminada! Agora vem aquela onde tenho sempre alguma dificuldade em me decidir. Se estivéssemos em Março ou Abril, a questão não se colocaria, mas estando o frio a começar a apertar, faço a parte de trás do quilt num tecido de algodão ou em tecido polar para o tornar mais quentinho? E se fizer com polar, coloco baeta ou não? Pelo menos até amanhã andarei a pensar nisto!

The easiest part is finished! Is in the process of choosing how to back the quilt that I always query myself. If we were in March or April I wouldn't be in doubt, but the weather is becoming really cold and I wonder if I should back the quilt with a cotton fabric or with a warm fleece. And if I use fleece, shall I add a batting layer? I'll be thinking about this until tomorrow, and then I'll make up my mind!

O que é que os padrões têm a ver uns com os outros? NADA! Mas nada mesmo. No entanto, o conjunto de cores fica, no todo harmonioso. Esperem só um bocadinho!

These prints don't match at all. AT ALL! Nevertheless, the whole thing looks nice together :-) Wait just a little bit!

Nem queria acreditar quando há pouco cheguei a casa e tinha estes tecidos à minha espera. Obrigada, Lizzet! São maravilhosos :-) Quero fazer mais um pequeno quilt com eles, sem grandes motivos de forma a que os tecidos tenham todo o protagonismo que merecem.

I could hardly believe when I got home and I had these fabrics waiting form me. Thank you, Lizzet! They are so pretty :-) I want to sew a small quilt with them using a simple pattern to make the prints stand out for themselves.

PS- Vânia, quando é que nos mostras a tua "nova" máquina de escrever?

Ontem de manhã andei a passear pela baixa de Faro - coisa rara nos últimos tempos, mas sempre que posso faço-o. Andei pelas lojas que gosto e a um número bem reduzido (acreditem que não ultrapassam as quatro ou cinco) consegui acrescentar uma - não fica bem no centro, mas também não é longe.

Yesterday morning I went for a walk in the centre - a rare moment in these last few moths, but I do it everytime I can. I went wandering around some of my favourite shops (believe me or not, these are not more than four or five) and found a new "favourite" - it's not right in the centre, but it's not far either.

Nem eu sabia como tinha saudades destas t-shirts :-))) mas a visita a uns amigos aguçou-me a vontade de as voltar a fazer. Não encontrei nenhuma t-shirt do tamanho pretendido, por isso a opção foi comprar um pólo.
Voltei a tomar-lhes o gosto, por isso aguardem novidades!

Not even I knew how much I missed making these shirts :-))) but going visiting some friends made me think of them again. As I couldn't find any long sleeve t-shirt I had to buy a polo shirt and now I'm in the mood of making some again!

*Romãs* *Pomegranates*

Há quem adore comer romãs e tire prazer do acto de, pacientemente, as descascar.

Há quem adore romãs, mas que tenha uma preguiça enorme para separar os bagos da casca.

E foi no meio de uma conversa sobre o assunto que aprendi um método rápido e eficaz de desprender os desliciosos bagos:

1. Partir a romã ao meio

2. Com a polpa virada para a palma da mão, bater com o cabo de uma colher de pau na casca

Não acreditam? Experimentem!

Um outro método interessante é este que a Sandra partilhou há dias.

There are people who love pomegranates and enjoys seeding them.

There are people who love pomegranates but is too lazy to take time seeding them.

And while we were talking about this I learned a very easy method:

1. Cut the pomegranate in half

2. Hold it with the seeds against your hand and with a wodden spoon hit the back of the fruit. All the seeds will fall loose :-)

If you don't believe me, try it!

*A pensar no Natal* *Thinking about Christmas

A minha amiga S. anda, pelo menos há três semanas a reclamar que já está tudo repleto de coisas de Natal e ainda não é altura. Já a A. diz que só faz compras no comércio tradicional, não consome em centros comerciais e já me "contratou" para a acompanhar na próxima época de saldos. A C. queixa-se de tudo e de nada e não faz nada, pois compra tudo feito.

Pois bem, para quem compra até pode ser cedo para começar a pensar no Natal, mas para quem faz o que oferece já não resta assim tanto tempo...

Na minha "to do list" tenho algumas pegas, bases de caneca, porta-chaves e, com certeza, alguns doces para os mais pequenos :-)))

It's been a few weeks now that my friend S is complaining about shops that have already started carrying Chrismas decorations. Another good friend of mine, A., told me that she won't buy anything in shopping centres and has already "hired" me to go round with her when the sales start. And C. complains about everything in life, that doens't make anything and buys everything made!

Well, for those who buy everything Christmas shopping sounds ages away, but for those who make all the prensents, there isn't much time left... That's why I have a "to do list" where I included some pot holders, mug coasters, keyfobs, and of course some sweet treats for the children :-)))

*Experiências culinárias* *Cooking experiences*

Tivesse eu gostado de ciências e teria sido a pessoa quase perfeita para estar num laboratório a fazer experiências :-), mas eu gostava era de aprender outras línguas, dissecar poemas e descobrir tudo o que estava atrás de um texto. Pensando bem não deixa de ser um pouco experimental, também...

Talvez por ter falhado o teste do laboratório "a sério", eu faça da cozinha uma das minhas áreas preferidas. Depois de há tempos ter feito uma incursão pelo mundo dos cupcakes, no fim-de-semana passado os "cake pops" encheram-me a casa de um aroma delicioso - este é um mundo novo a explorar, com certeza!

If I had been a good student at science I would have been the perfect person to be in a laboratory doing all kind of experiences :-) but I've always prefered to learn new languages, go deep in poetry and find every single hidden meaning behind a text. Well, if I give it a good thought studying literature is also some sort of science...

After failing the "laboratory test", my kitchen is one of my favourite places to be.

And if sometime ago I tried making some cupcakes, last weekend was dedicated to "cake pops", which smell invaded the whole house :-))) - this is "brand new world" ready to be explored!

Afinal não foram cinco, mas seis os pequenos quilts que fiz no último ano, e olhando para eles, agora que terminei um fico com vontade de continuar e partir para algo um pouco mais complexo. Vou pensar no assunto, ver os tecidos que tenho disponíveis, fazer uns rabiscos e por mãos à obra. É que gosto mesmo de os fazer: sem grandes esquemas ou muita matemática é giro ver o seu nascimento à medida que são construídos.

Algumas sugestões? De cores, ou até mesmo de padrões?

After all I didn't make five, but six quilts in the last year, and looking at them right now I feel I want to make more and start something more challenging. I need to think about it, check my fabric stash, draw some sketches and start sewing. I really enjoy making them :-) it feels nice to feel them growing.

Se os frutos e os vegetais "de Verão" são muito mais sumarentos e doces, os que nos chegam nesta altura do ano não são menos apetitosos. Reuni uns quantos que habitualmente consumimos em casa, mas ficou ainda a faltar a batata doce de Aljezur (diz-se que a melhor!), que assada no forno ou num cozido faz a perdição de qualquer um.

You may say that "Summer" fruits are mor juicy and sweet but the ones we get now are also very good. I gathered a few that we always have at home, but there's one missing: sweet potatos which we love ither roasted or in a stew.

Gamboas/Quince :

em casa, além da tradicional marmelada, gostamos de os consumir assados no forno e polvilhados com canela/ at home we not onl make quince chees but we also like to eat them roasted and sprinkled with cinnamon

Castanhas/Chestnuts:

cozinhadas num tacho de barro com muito sal e erva-doce são deliciosas / cooked in a clay pot with a good quantity of salt and anise are delicious

Romãs / Pomegranate:

 o que nós gostamos de encher uma boa taça de bagos carnudos! e por cima de um bolo? / we really love a good bowl of arils! and on a cake?

Pinhões/ Pine nuts:

fazem lembrar o Natal que já espreita em todos os cantos / make me think of Christmas, just round the corner

Abóboras decorativas/ Tiny squashes:

a avó costumava tê-las sempre em casa e assim que vi estas trouxe-as para casa / our grandmother always had them at home and when I saw these ones I just couldn't resist

Nada substitui as revistas de papel: o cheiro das letras e das imagens impressas, o folhear as páginas ainda coladas... mas não há dúvida que as revistas online representam cada vez mais uma fatia maior do mercado. Exemplo disso é a e Joie, publicada pela Jen do blog Indie Fixx. "Folheiem-na" e depois digam-me se não é maravilhosa..
Nas minhas preferências estão ainda a Sweet Paul Magazine, cujo número de Natal sai esta semana e a Gifted Magazine que acabou de sair

Open publication - Free publishing - More tutorial

Paper magazines are irreplaceable: the smell of recent printed images and texts, going through all the new pages... but we cannot deny that online magazines are becoming more and more important in the market. A good example is Joie, published by Jen from Indie Fixx. Browse it and then tell me what you think. Isn't it wonderful´?
Among my favourites there is also Gifted Magazine and the Sweet Paul Magazine, which Holiday issue will be published this week.

*Tutorial: rosas de tecido* *Tutorial: fabric roses

Com as tiras que me sobraram do quilt resolvi fazer umas pequenas rosas para aplicar ainda não sei bem onde, mas desta vez resolvi fotografar o processo para partilhar convosco.

Se tiverem dúvidas não hesitem em perguntar :-)

With the leftover strips of fabric from the quilt I decided to make some little roses to use I don't know where, but this time I took some pictures of the process to share with you.

Materiais: /Materials:

Tiras de tecido (estas têm três centímetros de largura) /Strips of fabric ( these ones are 3cm wide)

Gancho de cabelo /Hair pin

Alfinetes para prender /Pins

1. Dobrar a tira de tecido ao meio, no sentido da largura e prendê-la no gancho / Fold one end of the fabric on the width and hold it with the hair pin.

2. Comece a enrolar o tecido em volta do gancho, torcendo-o e prendendo com os dedos / Start wrapping the fabric around the hair pin and twist it at the same time; hold it firmly between your fingers.

3. Repita o processo continuamente até obter o tamanho de rosa desejado / Repeat until you have a rose of the size you wish.

4. Prenda a parte de baixo com alfinetes e retire o gancho / Pin the bottom of the rose and remove the hair pin.

5. Antes de retirar os alfinetes dê uns pontos para segurar a flor e finalmente aplique-a onde quiser: pregadeira, t-shirt, bandolete,... / Before removing the pins stitch the back of the rose in order to hold it in place and apply it wherever you wish: a brooch, a t-shirt, a hair, band,...
