Dos sete babetes que consegui fazer entre Sexta e ontem, estes quatro já estão prontos para seguir o seu destino. Hoje fiz um intervalo, é estou a fazer algo diferente para um menino que nasce em Março. Espero conseguir levar a bom porto o projecto, pois nunca fiz algo do género...
From the seven bibs I made over the weekend these four are ready to be sent. Today I had to take a break in "bib making" and I'm starting a new project for a boy who is due to born next March. I hope I can complete it as I've never made anything of the kind...

Preto e Branco / Black and White

Desde que me habituei a andar com um caderno na mala, já não posso saír de casa sem ele. Serve-me, muitas vezes, de companhia à hora de almoço, quando numa esplanada, na praia ou no jardim petisco qualquer coisa. A caixa das aguarelas tem ficado em casa, por isso os rabiscos têm sido feitos a preto e estão à espera (ou não) de serem coloridos. Ainda não vai ser este fim de semana, pois tenho uma encomenda de sete babetes para fazer...

Since I got used to carry my sketchbook in my bag, I can't leave home without it. It's my company at lunch time while at any terrace, beach or garden I nibble something. Lately I've been only scribbling in black and white as I leave the watercolour box at home. These are waiting to be coloured (or not) but I'm not doing it this weekend as I have an order of seven bibs to complete...

Cores de Outono / Autumn colours

Beije, brown, blue and a touch of green: one of my favourite colour combination for the new season. To that, we add a paysley print and we achieve something perfect - and that I found in these Marcus Brothers fabrics. The final detail in this tote is given by three new buttons, but almost twice my age.

Gastar ou desperdiçar?/ Spend or waste?

Depende do ponto de vista... Não tenho qualquer outro tipo de vício, por isso vejo as revistas como um bom investimento - não fosse esse o caso e já teríamos deitado fora as revistas que eram da avó!
Um dos atractivos de trabalhar na Quinta do Lago é ter por perto um quiosque quase exclusivo da imprensa internacional, onde não é difícil encontrar uma boa revista; é sim complicado escolher a que trazer. Há dias em que evito lá entrar, pois raramente saio de mãos vazias...

It depends on the point of view... I haven't got any other type of "addiction", therefor I see the purchase of magazines as an investment - if it wasn't that the case we wouldn't keep my grandmother's magazines!

One of the good things of working in Quinta do Lago is to have near by a newsagent almost completely dedicated to the international press, where it is not difficult to find a good magazine; the difficuly remains in choosing which to buy. I avoid going there everyday, otherwise I know I'll bring something with me...

Sobremesa / Dessert

Ontem tivemos uns amigos em casa para jantar, e para sobremesa resolvi fazer um gelado de morango com pão-de-ló e ovos moles. Como tenho uma alergia muitos produtos de compra, especialmente que contenham corantes, foi tudo confeccionado em casa.

Primeiro o pão-de-ló, que tive de deixar arrefecer. De seguida os ovos moles e por último o gelado de morango.

Yesterday we had friends over for dinner and for dessert I decided to make a strawberry ice-cream with Madeira cake and "ovos moles" ( a sweet made of egg yolks, sugar and a bit of water). As I'm allergic to a serious of food colouring and preservatives everything was made at home.

First I baked the Madeira cake, and let it cool. Then the egg's sweet and at last the strawberry ice-cream.

One craft a day, keeps the doctor away

Não é verdade? É isso que se tenta fazer por aqui. Todos os dias fazer qualquer coisa, nem que seja uma pequena flor, um desenho ou algo maior, como ontem que, durante a tarde, com muita calma e alguns intervalos fiz esta City Tote. Tem o tamanho ideal(34cm na base x 30cm de altura) para todas as "tralhas" que trazemos na mala no dia a dia.

Isn't it true? That's what we try to achieve around here. Everyday we produce something: a small flower, a drawing or something bigger. Yesterday I spent a quiet afternoon sweing this City Tote - while doing other things in the meantime... It's got the perfect size (34cm at the widest pont x 30cm height) for all the "bits and bobs" we carry around.

Menos uma preocupação /One less thing to worry about

É disto que eu gosto: levantar-me de manhã e poder agarrar-me às linhas e às agulhas. Saltei da cama e fui terminar a clutch que comecei anteontem. Agora é só embrulhar e entregar à destinatária.

Só me foi dito que a queria: "em tons de rosa", mas será isto que estão à espera?

This is what I really like: wake up and be able to do some work in the study. I jumped out of bed and went straight to my working table to finish this clutch I started on Thursday. Now I only have to wrap it and deliver it to the client.

I was only told that she wanted it in pink, but is she expecting anything like this? Fingers crossed!

Mother made it

Desisti da clutch, pelo menos por hoje. O cansaço do dia deixa-me por vezes com pouca paciência para lidar com pontos soltos e agulhas tortas e quando tudo começa a correr mal, mais vale arrumar tudo e adiar os acabamentos para amnhã.

Enquanto isso a mãe esteve no atelier dela a costurar umas bolsas que ficaram bem giras. Duas para mim (as quais já recheei :-)) e outras duas para quem as quiser. São feitas de telas de publicidade, plástico transparente na frente e fecham com um fecho.

I gave up of the clutch, at least for today. I'm feeling tired from work and not very patient to deal with broken stitches and bended needles and when everything starts to go wrong, it's better to stop.

Meanwhile my mother was in her sewing room making this pouches. Two of them are already mine (and I've filled them with my stuff:-)) and the other two are to whomever wants them. They were made of an advertising hoarding, transparant plastic in the front and they close with a zipper.

WIP: Pixie Bag

Tirei o serão para começar a por em ordem (se é que alguma vez isso será possível...) as encomendas pendentes.

A primeira em linha de espera é um clutch com base na Pixie Bag. Rosa e verde foram as cores escolhidas pela cliente que a encomendou. Espero que fique do seu agrado.

This evening I decided to start some outstanding orders (well I hope I can make everything on time...).

The first in the queue is a pink and green clutch inspired by the Pixie Bag. I hope the client likes it.

Presentes de aniversário /Birthday presents

É raro trocar um presente de aniversário, mas não há regra sem excepção e desta vez quebrei a regra. Paguei a diferença e trouxe para casa dois livros maravilhosos que me vão proporcionar boas e deliciosas horas na sua companhia. Já os tinha andado a namorar mas sem os adquirir. Sendo fruto de uma troca foi mais fácil trazê-los comigo, no entanto ainda deixei na loja uns outros que oportunamente hei-de comprar.

Seldom I swap birthday presents that were given to me, but there's no rule without exception and that is why I got these two books. I had to pay a little extra, but it was worth it. I'm sure that I'll spend hours going through them, going backwards and forwards without getting tired. I've been flirting with them for a while but I hadn't had the chance to get them until now. These books are all so wonderful that it was pretty difficult to bring only these two from the shop.

Ainda não tive tempo para os ler, mas já percebi que têm dicas interessantes que acompanham as maravilhosas fotografias do que pretendem retratar.

I haven't had time, yet, to read them but both have interesting tips for many of the things shown in the pictures.

P´ró menino e p'rá menina / For boys and girls

Os dois próximos bebés a nascer no meu circulo de amigas são ambos rapazes e só quando uma delas me chamou a atenção para o facto de eu fazer mais coisas de menina do que menino é que fui "folhear" os meus tecidos e, sem dúvida, proliferam as pequenas flores e os tons de rosa. O que fazer? Combater a tendência, é certo. Assim já comecei a adquirir alguns materiais com um ar mais masculino, isto é em tons de encarnado e azul. O que te parece, C.?

Apesar do esforço não me contive a apaixonei-me por um linho japonês que, a meu ver, também serve perfeitamente o lado masculino :-), ou não?

I've got two friends who are pregnant and both of them will give to birth baby boys, and only one of them called my attention to the fact that I only make girly things I paid some attencion to my stash and, guess what? The pinks and the little flowers are always present. What can I do? To fight against these choices could be a start. And that's what I've been doing by purchasing some "boyish" materials in red and blue. What do you think, C.?
Despite the effort I couldn't resist and fell in love with this japanese linen, which from my p0int of view also fits a boy :-), or doesn't?

Inspiração/ Inspiration

Não sei se já perceberem, mas nas duas últimas quintas-feiras, o tema do nosso post tem sido "Inspiração". Hoje não é excepção e, por mero acaso, tive conhecimento de, não um, mas dois projectos que fazem, realmente jus à palavra INSPIRAÇÃO.
O Craft Hope nasceu nos Estados Unidos e teve como missão reunir bonecos feitos artesanalmente para serem entregues a crianças necessitadas de uma instituição em particular. Lançaram o apelo e as expectativas foram largamente ultrapassadas. Com um dos vários projectos pensavam que conseguiriam apenas reunir 30 ou quarenta bonecas, mas no final obtiveram um supreendente número de 405 peças feitas à mão, todas ou quase todas acompanhadas de doces mensagens para os destinatários.
O segundo projecto (De Coração), também localizado no outro lado do Atlântico nasceu em Fevereiro de 2009 e tem como objectivo angariar brinquedos e bonecos feitos à mão para serem distribuidos por instituições no final deste ano
Com este post deixo apenas um pedido: divulguem esta ideia, ponham as ideias a fervilhar e quem sabe não nos juntamos e fazemos algo do género? Pensem nisto, sim?

I don’t know if you’ve realised but the last two Thursdays have been dedicated to the theme “Inspiration”. Today it’s not an exception and just by chance I got to know about two projects that really meet the word INSPIRATION.
Craft Hope started in the USA and one of its projects was to gather handmade dolls to be handed in to children in an orphanage. First they thought they could get 30 or 40 dolls but in the end they received 405 handmade dolls, most of them came with a special message from the crafter who made it.
The second project(From Heart) was also born overseas, on the other side of the Atlantic, in February 2009 and it aims to get handmade dolls and toys to be given to poor children by the end of the year.
Now, may I ask you a little favour? Spread this good news, put your bright minds to work and who knows one of these days we make something similar? Think about it, ok?

Do fim de semana / From the weekend

Apesar de já ser Setembro, as temperaturas altas ainda proporcionam umas belas idas à praia, e como a silly season já terminou, agora pode-se, finalmente, aproveitar o areal sem ter de pedir licença para estender a toalha. Sabe tãoooo bem!

Para completar um fim-de-semana bem passado, nada como terminá-lo a fazer algo de que se gosta. Ontem, vítima de uma insónia matinal, aproveitei o fresco e fui para o atelier fazer estas duas bolsas . Às dez da manhã já estavam terminadas...

Despite being September the high temperatures are still suitable to go to the beach and as the silly season is over, now I can enjoy my favourite beach without being necessary to ask permission to lay my towel. It feels sooooo good!

To complete a very nice weekend nothing better than make something that I like. Yesterday, as I suffered from an early insomnia and it was cool I made this set of clutch and pouch. At ten o'colck they were finished...

Inspiração /Inspiration

Desde miúdas que os livros exercem sobre nós um fascínio enorme. Creio que herdámos isto da avó materna e do avô paterno, pois nenhum dos pais é leitor assíduo. Lembro-me que aos 7 anos, aquando de uma longa estadia no hospital fiquei conhecida pela "papa livros"; todos os dias me renovavam o stock. Devo ter lido toda a colecção da Anita e uns tantos outros da Verbo cujos títulos já não me recordo. Quanto à mana, bem mais pequena, ficava horas no corredor em casa da avó e tirava todos os livros um por um e ficava a vê-los; também tinha a mania de rabiscar cadernos inteiros e depois "obrigava-nos" a ler o que tinha escrito. Enfim, recordações de infância.

Ainda hoje somos incapazes de passar por uma livraria e não entrar: as capas, o cheiro dos livros, o ambiente... Apesar da variedade que encontramos na net, o prazer de os comprar dentro de uma livraria é inigualável.

Sou capaz de comprar um livro apenas porque gosto da capa, e talvez por isso não tenha adquirido muitos recentemente, pois começo a ficar farta dos livros cujas capas são simples imagens de um filme ou retiradas de um site da especialidade. Talvez por isso me tenha enamorado por este romance a primeira vez que o vi na Bertrand já há alguns meses. Aproveitando um vale (que nunca se devem desperdiçar!!!) trouxe-o para ler na viagem de segunda-feira. Como tive direito a outro vale (ena!!!!) já tenho outros debaixo de olho - o pior mesmo vai ser decidir...

We've always felt fascinated about books. I think we got this from our grandparents as our parents are not readers as we are. I remember when I was seven and was hospitalised for a long period I was known by "the bbok eater"; everyday my stock of books had to be renewed. I must have read all the Anita (look at the link to find the equivalent in your country) books and the same amount from Verbo publishers. Well, my sister didn't do any better: she used to spend long hours sitting on granny's corridor floor taking down all the books from the shelves and looking at them carefully; she also had this habit of scribbling notebooks and then made us read what she had "written". Good memories from our childhood...
Today when we pass by a bookshop we have to go in and feel the smell of new books, go through book covers, feel the atmosphere... this is something irresisteble, that's is why, despite the variety we find on the web, it is much more pleasant to buy them from the "real" bookshops.

Sometimes I buy books just because I like the covers, and that may be a reason for not buying as many as usual recently: I'm sick of looking at covers that are images from films or chosen from a image website. Maybe because of that I felt in love with this book as soon as I saw it a few months ago in Bertrand. Making use of a voucher ( that should never be waisted) I bought it on Monday to read while traveling by train. With this purchase I got another voucher (yuppiiiii!!!!) and now I'm thinking about buying one of these - the difficult part will be to choose which.
