O senhor Nagashima * Mr. Nagashima

Enquanto passava pelo Príncipe Real encontrei este senhor a pintar um dos maravilhosos edifícios que circundam a praça, mas só passados uns dias é que hoje soube que ele é uma figura bem conhecida na zona, já com direito a várias referências na blogosfera (aqui e aqui). A máquina, que anda sempre dentro da mala, viu a luz do dia e captou as imagens que ele estava a pintar. São maravilhosas, não são?

While I was wandering around the Principe Real Square, I met this gentleman painting one of the many beautiful buildings around that area, but only a few days later I got to know that he is a well know person in the area, with several blog mentions over the past (here and here). As I always bring my camera with me, I thought it would be nice to capture this images. Aren't his paintings gorgeous?

Do Jardim Botânico * From the Botanical Garden

O mesmo Jardim Botânico que visitámos há uns meses tem recantos que não estão abertos ao público, mas que por entre portas e travessas conseguimos ir espreitar :-)

Ao ver este recanto, confesso que as primeiras pessoas que me vieram à cabeça foi a "dupla maravilha" BrancoPrata. Vá-se lá saber porquê... :-)))

The same Botanical Garden we visited some months ago has a few hidden treasures that are not accessible to the public, but where we managed to go and take a look round :-)

When I saw this, I must say that the first people that came to my mind were the "wonder team" from BrancoPrata. Go figure out why... :-)))

Sunday, sweet Sunday

Ontem foi dia de passeio, primeiro pela Baixa e de tarde fomos até à LxFactory, onde houve feira.

Foi uma tarde de encontros - doces encontros - e tivémos, também , a  oportunidade de conhecer a simpática e talentosa Cláudia, que só conhecíamos da blogosfera. O final do dia foi uma agradável surpresa com o programa na LerDevagar :-)

Yesterday we had a great time! First thing in the morning we wandered around the centre and after lunch we zoomed to LxFactory where we had the opportunity to meet the nice and talented Claudia, whom we knew only through her blog. At the end of the day we stopped at LerDevagar to listen to some live music :-) 

E para sobremesa... * And for dessert...

Há dias que estou para ir lá, mas pela incompatibilidade de horários, só hoje me foi possível descer a rua e ir espreitar esta pasteleria francesa. Beatrice é quem está à frente da mesma e brinda-nos com um sorriso e algumas iguarias deliciosas. Trouxe o que havia disponível: queques de cenoura e estes rectângulos de framboesas. Para a próxima tenho de ir mais cedo :-)

I've been trying to go there for days, but our schedules are not compatible so I only had the chance to go to this french pastry shop today. Beatrice is the Chef and welcomes everybody with a smile and a few delicios cakes. I brought what was available: carrot muffins and these raspberries rectangles. Next time I'll have to go earlier :-)

WIP: Novas carteiras * WIP: New coin purses

Apesar dos recursos ainda serem poucos, não consigo deixar de estar ocupada com o Pano p'ra Mangas - eu sei, o ritmo está mais lento, mas é só nesta fase de adaptação - ainda assim já tenho algumas carteiras talhadas e prontas a serem cosidas. Mais uns dias e volta tudo à normalidade :-)

Depite the lack of resources, I can't help myself not doing anything for Pano p'ra Mangas - I've been working at a slower pace but it's only in the begining. Nevertheless I've got a few coin purses ready to be sewn. A few extra days and everything will go back to normality :-)

The Printed Blog Portugal

Este é um post que teria mais cabimento num outro género de blogue, mas como não tenho "nenhum outro género de blogue", então terei mesmo de partilhar esta "descoberta" aqui.

Ía eu entre o Chiado e o Príncipe Real quando numa banca de jornais houve um título que me chamou a atenção:"The Printed Blog Portugal". Ora sendo eu uma curiosa, uma fã da imprensa escrita e blogger desde 2004 (sim, eu já tive outro blogue antes deste...) não podia deixar aquele título ali no quiosque.

Este é o segundo número da revista, que é mensal e chega às bancas por volta do dia 15, e está subordinado ao tema Portugal e os Portugueses. Vale a pena comprar para ler e, claro, para ir ver os blogues de quem lá escreve.

Quem tiver curiosidade imediata poderá consultar a página no Facebook, quer da edição portuguesa, quer da internacional - e por favor, não comecem já com o típico "oh não, mais um conceito importado", ok?

This is the sort of post that doens't really fit in this blog, but I couldn't help myself whithout sharing this magazine I found the other day with you. As I was walkind around Lisbon when I saw this title shouting from one of the many newsagents in the streets and I had to buy it.

This is the second issue of The Printed Portugal and I really hope that this publication will last long... If you are curious about it you can check their Facebook page or the international one.

Pausa * In stand by

Mais uma pausa, desta vez compulsiva, na minha manta. Foi com pena que guardei tudo dentro de uma caixa, a perfumei com alfazema e fechei-a por tempo indeterminado. A razão? Simples: não cabia na bagagem que me foi permitida trazer - é que o espaço no destino também não abunda :-) 

Lá terei de me contentar com coisas mais pequenas, como as últimas carteiras que tenho feito...

Once again I had to push the button "pause" on the process of making my quilt. I was a bit sad when I put it in a box, spread some lavander on it and closed for unknown time. Why this? Simple as this: I didn't have luggage allowance to bring it - my sdestination doesn't have enough room for all this stuff :-)

But I won't stop, I'll just have to stick to smaller things like the coin purses I made lately...

Capas de livros * Book covers

O hábito de forrar livros já vem de trás. Em casa da avó havia muitos livros forrados com folhas de revistas, a mãe aproveitava papeis de embrulho bonitos para forrar os dela e nós, é mesmo o que nos vem à mão, mas o papel craft tem a nossa preferência, pois podemos personalizá-las. Há uns dias pedi à "nossa menina" que fizesse uns desenhos e assim ela anda sempre comigo :-)

Porque é que fazemos isto? Porque protege a integridade das capas enquanto os livros andam nas nossas malas e porque, se estivermos a ler em público, não gostamos que estejam a espreitar as nossas leituras. Manias, sei lá...

The habit of covering our books runs in the family. Our grandmother used to cover the books with magazine pages, our mother used pretty wrapping paper to cover hers ans we use whaterver is nearest, but we have a crush for kraft paper, as we can custom it. A few days ago I asked "our little girl" to make some drawings on this book, so now she's always with me :-)

Why do we do this? Because it protects the back of the books while we carry them in our bags and, if we are reading in public, we don't like people to peep into our readings.  :-)))

Em mudanças * Moving

Mudanças inesperadas obrigam-me a ausentar-me do Pano p'ra Mangas por uns dias.

Mudar é bom. Significa evoluir, ou como dizia Pessoa: "É o tempo da travessia: e, se não ousarmos fazê-la, teremos ficado, para sempre, à margem de nós mesmos.".

Agora vou fazer a mala, que já amanhã é dia de viagem :-)

Some unexpected changes in my life which imply moving will be the reason for my absense in the next few days.

To change is to move forward. As Fernando Pessoa once said: "it's a crossing time and if we do not dare to do it , we will live forever outside ourselves" . [this translation sounds weird...]

And now I'm packing as tomorrow I'll be travelling :-)

Tutorial: como fazer uma pequena borla * Tutorial: how to make a small tassel

Ontem estive a fazer umas pulseiras - para variar um pouco - e lembrei-me que seria interessante partilhar convosco o método que eu uso para fazer as pequenas borlas de tecidoque lhes acrescentei.

Se duvidas houver, não hesitem em perguntar, não?

Yesterday as I was making a few bracelets - to escape from the usual items - I thought it would be a good idea to share with you how I make the small fabric tassels I added as charms.

If you have any queries, please raise your hands and ask, ok?

1. Materiais:

2. Preparar a campânula que vai servir de base à borla, como mostram as duas seguintes fotografias
2. Prepare the base for the tassel as shown in the two pictures below:

3. Cortar a tira de tecido em franja, sem que o corte atinja o limite da tira

3. Cut the fabric into a fringe, without reaching the opposite side of the strip

4. Enrole a franja com os dedos, segurando-a bem e no final prenda a parte superior com uns pontos, de modo a que não se desenrole nem se solte
4. Roll the finge between your fingers and hold it firmly; in the end stitch it in order to keep it in place.

5. Com um pouco de cola prenda a borla à campânula e deixe secar. Está pronta a ser usada :-)
5. With a bit of glue stick the tassel to the base and leave it to dry for a while. Now it's ready to be used :-)

Capuchinho Vermelho * Little Red Ridding Hood

Um dos meus contos favoritos de sempre é o do Capuchinho Vermelho, se bem que nenhuma história bate o final que a mãe dava à Casinha do Açúcar - no final, João e Maria empurravam a bruxa para dentro do forno e só aí a velha choupana se transformava numa deliciosa casinha de açúcar com rebuçados ( na minha altura ainda não havia gomas!), chocolates e uma centena de outras guloseimas - e ontem, ao olhar para o galão da Rosa Pomar e para umas peças metálicas que comprei há tempos no Etsy, achei juntas dariam um resultado engraçado :-)

One of my favourite tales ever is the Little Red Ridding Hood, althought none of these children stories is better then the end of Hansel and Gretel which my mother used to tell us - in the end both children pushed the witch into the hot oven and the little hut transformed into a nice little house made of chocolate, candy and hundreds of other sweets - and yesterday, looking at Rosa Pomar's wooven ribbon and some charms I bought from Etsy some time ago, I thought that I could match them together :-)

Da feira da ladra... From the flea market

No Sábado fomos à Feira da Ladra de Lisboa e já quase na hora de nos virmos embora, eis que olho para o chão e vejo uma caixa com estes carrinhos de linha :-) Perguntei o preço de cada um, mas a senhora só me vendeu a caixa completa. Dei-lhe o dobro do que ela me pediu, e ela obrigou-nos a trazer mais um saco para molas feito de pano...

Um achado delicioso! :-) semelhante ao que fizemos no ano passado.

Last Saturday we went to Lisbon Flea Market and when we were going back home, my eyes got stuck in a box with this thread spools :-) I asked how much they cost, but the old lady who was there only sold me the full box. I gave her twice what she asked me for and she made us bring a fabric pouch for pegs...

This was a great finding! :-) similar to the one we made last year.

Livro/Book: The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt

Há dias descobri uns blocos de patchwork enquanto navegava no Pintrest e ao seguir os links encontrei este grupo no Flickr o qual tem como objectivo completar os blocos existentes no livro The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt. Resultado: Encomendei o livro!!! (que por acaso chegou no dia do meu aniversário - belo presente, não é?). Podem ler um pouco da história por trás deste livro aqui.

A few days ago as I was wandering around Pintrest I found some adorable patchwork blocks and through the links I got to this Flickr group which goal is to, week after week, complete all the 111 blocks in the book The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt. As a result I had to buy it!!! (which arrived  on my birthday - what a nice present, wasn't it?). You can read here a bit of the story behind this book.

No início dos anos 20 a perspectiva da vida no campo não era a melhor e de modo a contrariar esta opinião, a revista "The Farmer's Wife" lançou o desafio e pediu às suas leitoras que respondessem à seguinte questão "Permitiriam que as vossas filhas casassem com um agricultor?". Havia prémios para as melhores respostas e houve 7000 cartas recepcionadas na sede da revista, das quais se publicam neste livro alguns excertos. As cartas vencedoras estão na base de inspiração do quilt deste livro.

In the early 1920s the perspective of a life in the country was not the best and in order to proof that that was not right, "The Farmer's Wife" magazine asked their readers to answer the following question "If you had a daughter of marriageable age, would you, in the light of your own experience, want her to marry a farmer? ". There waer 7000 letters received and a small part of it received several awards. This book has some of this letters which were the inspiration for the quilt shown in this book

Mais uma pequena clutch * Another baby clutch

Depois de a primeira ter seguido viagem até à Alemanha, e como ainda tinha tecidos do mesmo género, fiz outra ligeiramente diferente, a qual está disponível aqui ou aqui.

The first one is on its way to Germany and as I still had some of the same fabrics, I made this one which is available here or there.

Portas * Doors

É sabido que tenho uma grande pancada por portas antigas, e se andar com a máquina na mala, o mais certo é que as mesmas fiquem registadas - não vá a propriedade ser demolida! Olhão é prodigioso em portas tão bonitas quanto velhas e mal tratadas, e num dia quente de Julho andámos a fotografá-las para vos mostrar.

It's known that I've got a crush on old doors and if I'm carrying my camera, I always take pictures before it disappears! Olhão has got so many old and beautiful doors - unfortunately they are in very bad condition - and back in July we wandered around taking some pictures of them.

No atelier * Inside my study

Cá dentro impera o sossego e o silêncio, apenas quebrado pelo chilrear dos pássaros lá fora e o cantar dos grilos - demasiados grilos para o meu gosto!!!. Como companhia, tenho a nogueira plantada pelo avô Zé, há mais anos do que aqueles que tenho de nascida e, ocasionalmente, Ginger - o gato - que vem arranhar as unhas no tapete da entrada.

Inside there is silence, and the only sound I can hear are the birds singing outside and the crickets - too many for me!!!! The "crowd" around here is only the walnut tree, planted by my grandfather over forty years ago, and occasionly, Ginger - the cat - who comes round to scratch his paws on the rug.

Feriado * Holiday

Hoje, em Faro, comemorou-se o dia da cidade, daí ter sido feriado. Fiquei a saber - confesso que nunca me tinha questionado - que neste dia se celebra a elevação de Faro a cidade, algo que ocorreu durante o reinado de D. João III, mais precisamente em 1540. Daí, o dia ter sido aproveitado para descansar. Ainda assim, ao final da tarde ainda estive a fazer mais um porta moedas :-)

Today it was a local holiday so I took it off and had some rest. Nevertheless, late in the afternoon I made another coin purse using this bright and pretty velvetine :-)

Ainda a escola... *School time...

Enquanto do lado de fora se fazia a revisão das leituras do ano passado, dentro do atelier estive ocupada a fazer mais uma pasta para livros, desta vez uma encomenda especial da minha afilhada :-) Será que acertei?

On the outside somoeone was practising last year's reading and inside my sewing room I was making this book cover for my goddaughter :-) Is she going to like it?

A escola está a começar * School is about to begin

Se há coisa que me recordo de quando andava na escola era a azáfama do início do ano em que tínhamos de ir comprar cadernos, canetas, lápis e milhentas outras coisas. Os cadernos eram, por opção, de capa preta, pois não havia coisa melhor que passar serões inteiros a forrá-los :-) Por me lembrar destes momentos, fiz esta pasta que está disponível aqui ou aqui.

I always remember when I was a child and I had to choose new materials for the year starting in September: notebooks, pens, pencils and thousands of other things. The notebooks wer, by option, with a black cover as I loved to spend the evenings decorating them :-) And to keep this days alive on my mind I made this tote which is available from here or or there.

Patchwork baby clutch

Depois de ontem ter passado a tarde a fazer porta-moedas, o dia de hoje rendeu-me apenas esta clutch :-) Lá cabe o essencial e é perfeita para uma saída à noite com os amigos. Não concordam?

Yesterday I spent the afternoon making these coin purses and today I only had time to make this clutch. :-) Everything you need fits in and it's perfect for a night out with friends. Don´t you agree?
