Perguntas (muito) difíceis # (Very) difficult questions

Depois de uma vez ter perguntado numa loja em Faro por "fazenda às bolas" não me livro da fama de fazer preguntas difíceis. Confesso que foi um pouco por brincadeira, mas nunca mais ninguém se esqueceu da história.

Depois disso, de cada vez que lá entro para colocar uma questão, atrás do balcão está sempre um olhar desconfiado. Acreditem que não pergunto por nada que não exista. Até admito que não tenham certos artigos porque não são vendáveis em quantidades que justifiquem tê-los, mas dizerem-me que os desconhecem ou que os mesmos não existem já considero abusivo - falta de curiosidade, ausência de interesse e a visita de uns comerciais com catálogos do século passado.

Na lista de questões/produtos desconhecidos, logo inexistentes estão:

- a tal fazenda de bolas (se existe no pronto-a-vestir, poderia haver em peça, não?)

- grega de veludo

- cortadores rotativos e respectivas lâminas

- dedais de cabedal ou outro material sem ser o metal

- linha  para quilting ("o que é isso?" ouvi do outro lado da linha quando a minha mãe fez o pedido numa conhecida retrosaria de Lisboa)

- baeta de algodão

- entretela x ou y (acreditem!!! comprar entretela nesta cidade é uma verdadeira aventura...)

Felizmente existe a internet e as lojas online!

Once I asked for a polkadotted tweed in a very traditional fabric shop in Faro and since then I'm known as "the girl who asks difficult questions". I admit it was kind of a joke - as I knew the answer would be "no", but it is still in everybody's mind.

After that day, everytime I go there and have questions to ask, all the ladies look at me kind of thinking "what is she up to this time!!!", but honnestly I never ask for things that do not exist. I understand that they don't carry stock of a lot of things because they don't sell it enough, but telling me that they have never heard of such thing, or that it does not exist...well, that is too much for me! - lack of interest and curiosity and suppliers who carry catalogues from the last century.

In this (already) enormous list of unknown/unexisting items I can count:

- (the famous) polkadoted tweed

- velvet rick-rack

- rotary cutters and blades

- leather (or other "soft" material) thimbles

-quilting thread ("what in the world is that?" could I hear over the phone when my mother was asking for it at a well known haberdashery in Lisbon)

- cotton batting

- interfacing (believe me, it is a hell of an adventure trying to buy interfacing in Faro!)

Fortunatelly there's the internet and online shops.

Para o chá # For tea

Domingo que é domingo tem sempre direito a um bolinho para o lanche e hoje não foi excepção. A receita foi recomendada por uns amigos que encontrámos por acaso, e como a "curiosidade matou o gato", não hesitei em experimentá-la.

Da receita original alterei a quantidade de manteiga, que me pareceu excessiva e em vez de usar 200g reduzi para 150g.

Tem bom aspecto e sabe ainda melhor!

A Sunday to be a Sunday has to include some treats for tea, and today we followed the rule. The recipe was recomended by some friends we met earlier and as "curiosity killed the cat" I had to try it.

From the original recipe I reduced the amount of butter from 200g to 150g.

It looks good and tastes even better!

Para a nova estação # For the coming season

Finalmente consegui ter tempo para fazer mais uma clutch. Os tweeds têm estado guardados há umas semanas e ainda não tinha tido oportunidade de lhes pegar.  Esta é a primeira de algumas que estão em fase de confecção. O modelo é Keyka Lou  (adaptado) e os materiais são 100% naturais: algodão no interior e lã no exterior.

Finally I got some time to make a clutch. The tweeds I boughs some weeks ago have been safely kept waiting for this moment. This is the first of some which are being taylored. The pattern is Keyka Lou (adapted) and I used 100% natural fibres: cotton in the lining and wool in the outside shell.

Por Lisboa # In Lisbon

No último ano tenho andado ausente deste pequeno espaço, não se pense que por falta de vontade, mas por ausência de disponibilidade e espaço para produzir. Quando se está habituada a ter uma divisão da casa para trabalhar à vontade, é difícil reproduzir essas condições num outro local. Ideias não me faltam, projectos também não, mas por enquanto a máquina de costura está guardada e os tecidos guardados para outras ocasiões.

Mas há males que vêm por bem, e re-adquiri o hábito de desenhar, após ter frequentado um workshop de Diários Gráficos com o Prof. Salavisa. Assim, ando sempre com o meu caderno atrás e, ao fim-de-semana, o estojo das aguarelas também vem na mala.

Em dois sábados de feira fui, apenas, passear ao Jardim do Príncipe Real e se num deles rabisquei o quiosque, noutro (uns meses mais tarde :-S) dei-lhe uns toques de cor. Oportunamente colocarei aqui mais desenhos.

For the last year I've been away from this blog, not because I want to, but due to the lack of time and space to produce anything. When we get used to have one room in the house exclusively to use as a craft room it is difficult to get used to different conditions. On my mind I have lots of ideas and projects, but for the moment my sewing machine will remain in the box as well as my stash of fabrics.

On the other hand, after attending a "Visual Journals'" workshop with Prof. Salavisa, I restarded drawing, so I always carry my journal with me and on the weekends my watercolour box comes along in my bag.

In two different occasions I went to Jardim do Príncipe Real and on one of the days I draw, and a couple of months later I painted it. Soon I'll post some more of these scketches.

Mais um bocadinho # Another bit

O tempo que me sobrou depois de ter ajudado a mãe a colocar as fotos da exposição no blog não foi muito, ainda assim consegui terminar mais uma tira do quilt. Amanhã tentarei conjugar os restantes quadrados do "charm pack", pois os rosa já acabaram e ainda tenho disponíveis os azuis, os verdes e os laranja. Pensei que ao comprar um um "charm pack" teria a tarefa facilitada, não só pelo facto de os quadrados já virem cortados, mas também pela conjugação dos tecidos - enganei-me! (pergunto: é sempre assim ou não acertei na escolha? se alguém com experiência na matéria me souber elucidar, agradeço).

I didn't have much time left after helping my mother blogging the exhibition pictures, nevertheless I managed to finish another set of blocks for my new quilt. Tomorrow I'll try to match the remaining squares from the charm pack I bought - I've finished the pink ones and I've gost left the blue, the green and the orange ones. I thought it would be easier to make a quilt from a charm pack not only beacuse they are precut but also becaause of the patterns - unfortunately I was wrong! (may I ask you: is this always like this or did I make a wrong choice? If anyone could help me I would be very thankful)

Sonhar acordada # Day dreaming

É normalmente à hora de almoço que o meu caderno sai da mala e, abstraída do que me rodeia, começo a dar forma ao que me vai na mente. Alguns são classificados como projectos, pois a curto prazo saem do papel e ganham forma nos diversos materiais de que disponho; outros ficam pelo planeta dos sonhos, pois pelas mais variadas razões nunca chegam a saltar cá para fora. Depois há ainda uma terceira categoria, que não se encaixam nem num lado nem noutro, pois as hipóteses de se tornarem realidade têm o mesmo peso das de ficarem na imaginação - é o caso destes dois quilts.
As cores aqui usadas são apenas exemplificativas, bem como os "padrões"; deste modo tornam-se mais visuais e aproximam-se mais de uma realidade que talvez venham a alcançar.

Usually, at lunch time, I take my sketch book out of my bag and, lost form the surrounding world, I start scribbling what's in my mind. Some are saved in the "projects' folder" as in a short term they come out of the drawer and become something real; other remain in the "dreams' folder" as for (so) many reasons they never come out. Then, there's a third category for the ones which have a chance to be either in one or in the other folder, which is the situation of these two quilts.

I use colours and pattens just to make them seem more real and with that I can have a better idea of how they are going to look like if they become real quilts.

WIP:Mais um quit # WIP:Another quilt

Termina-se um e começa-se outro :-) Estou a usar um "charm pack", ao qual adicionei alguns dos tecidos que tenho em casa, por isso não faço ideia de qual será o resultado final. Por enquanto só os tons de rosa estão programados, mas ainda faltam os verdes e os azuis.

I've finished one and I'm starting another one :-) I'm using a charm pack to which I added some of the fabrics I've got at home, so I haven't got a clue of how it's going to look like in the end. So far I've used the pink squares, but I still have the greens and the blues.

Sunday stash # twenty*

* eu sei que é segunda-feira, mas o que posso fazer se cheguei atrasada?

O meu segundo quilt § My second quilt

Bolas, riscas, encarnado e azul: a combinação perfeita para a minha irmã! É para ela este quilt, que seguirá na segunda-feira por correio. Como não tinha baeta de algodão para por por dentro e não gosto da textura do enchimento sintético, usei uma manta de lã polar de cor a combinar e já não tive de me preocupar com a parte de trás. Sei que foge completamente às regras, mas se elas existem, de vez em quando também podem ser quebradas. Que tal mana, ficou ao teu gosto?

Polka dots, stripes, blue and red: the perfect combination for my sister! I made this quilt especially for her and it will be posted on Monday. As I didn't have any cotton batting and I don't like the polyester one, I used fleece to back the quilt - this way I didn't have to worry about which fabric to use. I know this is against the rules, but if they exist, once in a while it's ok to break them. Do you like it, sis?

WIP - Paper Piecing

Ontem cortei mais tecido do que o inicialmente planeado, por isso parece-me que os planos para fazer um ou dois panos de tabuleiro vão dar lugar a um projecto maior, só ainda não sei bem o quê. Se bem que construir uma peça e depois talhar umas bolsas ou uns babetes também não seria má ideia... Veremos!

Yesterdy I cut more fabric than what I had initially planned, therefore the plans for making one or two placemats will be replaced by something bigger, I just don't know what. And if I make a big piece and then taylor some pouches or bibs? It may not be a bad idea... We'll see!

Paper piecing

Depois de ter partido a linha uma centena de vezes; depois de se ter quebrado (mais) uma agulha; e depois de eu me ter arreliado com ela, a minha máquina de costura resolveu fazer greve! Se ela pensa que me vence, está enganada, pois a alternativa estava mesmo ali ao lado :-) Paper piecing não carece do uso da máquina de costura, por isso tenho tudo pronto para começar um projecto novo. Vai ser o serão de hoje.

Em vez de cortar hexágonos (eu sei, na imagem aparecem pentágonos, mas isso foi só para a fotografia...) de papel resolvi cortá-los em entretela não colante bem grossa. Esperemos que resulte.

After breaking the thread one hundred times; after destroying (another) needle; and after I got angry with it, my sewing machine is on strike! Leave it! She won't take it for better. The alternative for this evening doesn't require its use, so I have everything ready for a new project making use of the old paper piecing technique.
Instead of cutting paper hexagons ( I know, the photo shows pentagons, but that was only for the picture...) I decided to use a heavy weight interfacing. Let's see how it works...

Mary Poppins' bag

Eu já sabia que deste molde iria resultar algo grande, nunca pensei é que fosse tão grande! Para quem gosta de malas ao estilo Mary Poppins esta é perfeita: é enorme e cabe tudo (mesmo tudo!!!) lá dentro.

Para o exterior usei um retalho de ganga que comprei há umas semanas e para o forro escolhi um dos tecidos de Verão do IKEA. Tenho de repetir a experiência!

I knew that from this pattern I would get something big, but I've never imagined that it could be soooooo big! For someone who likes Mary Poppins' bags this one is perfect: it's enormous and it takes everything inside. For the outside fabric I used some denim I bought a few weeks ago and for the lining I chose a Summer IKEA fabric. I must repeat this!

Comprei estes dois tecidos ontem e já os estou a imaginar em diversas peças. Dependendo dos contrastes, tanto ficarão bem em exteriores como em forros. Não vos parece?

I bought these two pieces yesterday and since I saw them I imagined several things being made. Depending on the contrasting material they will look beautiful both as main fabric or as lining. Don't you agree?

Etiquetas /Labels

Ontem estive a etiquetar alguns dos meus materiais. Comecei por apenas por o meu nome, mas achei que ficavam muito insípidos :-D, então resolvi adicionar-lhes um toque pessoal: papel, caneta e eis que surgem. Fiquei com vontade de fazer mais. Hei-de colori-las, mas deixei-as assim (apenas apaguei o nome), caso gostem delas e as queiram usar. Se não conseguirem fazer o download da imagem, enviem-me um e-mail.

I spent a good part of yesterday's evening labeling some of my crafting materials. I started just by writing my name on them but the looked so sad :-D, so I decided to add to them a bit of me: paper, pen and here they are. I think I'm going to make some more. I'll colour them, but I left them like this (I've only deleted my name) in case you like them and want to use them. If you cannot download the image, send me an e-mail.

Ao serão / Today's evening

Amanhã à noite vou participar numa "Sizzix Nigth" no Sitio das Artes, em Faro, pelo que o serão de hoje tem sido passado a marcar os meus materiais enquanto no forno tenho uns biscoitinhos para levar - é que a noite promete ser longa...

Entretanto, perdi-me de amores por um molde de uma mala e parece-me que já tenho trabalho para o fim-de-semana - como se não tivesse outras coisas para fazer. :-P

Tomorrow evening I'll be attending a "Sizzix Night" at a crafts shop in Faro, so I decided to bake some biscuits to take with me, while I label all my materials.

Meanwhile I fell in love with a new bag pattern which I'll try over the weekend - as I didn't have anything else to worry about. :-P

Presentes / Gifts

Quando o D. nasceu, há quase sete anos (oh, como o tempo voa...) eu andava, mais uma vez, entusiasmada com os bordados em ponto cruz e bordei um quadro que, durante bastante tempo, esteve pendurado na parede do seu quarto. Nessa altura só sabia coser à mão e ainda não me tinha atrevido a costurar o que quer que fosse.

Em Março, nasce o F. (irmão do D.) e, inspirada pela tendência dos quilts, fiz-lhe um bem simples para o berço. Foi o primeiro e está longe de ser perfeito. Outros (ainda bem simples) já estão a ser projectados :-)

When D. was born, almost seven years ago (oh, time flies...) I was much into cross stitch, so I made a picture which was hanged on his bedroom wall for quite a long time. By then I only knew how to hand sew and I had never tried using the sewing machine.
Next March, F. will be born (D.'s brother), and inspired by the quilt's trend I made him a very simple one for his cot. This was the first and it is far from being perfect. Other ones (still very simple) are already on my mind :-)
