O nosso Natal # Our Christmas

O nosso Natal é sempre uma grande animação. A viagem até ao Alto Alentejo é longa, e este ano decorreu sob a ameaça constante da chuva. Uma paragem a meio para ir buscar a mana, e seguimos novamente até ao destino. O frio não se fez sentir como nos anos anteriores, mas a lareira manteve-se sempre acesa.

O reencontro com os que estão longe é uma alegria e os preparativos para a consoada enchem a casa de sorrisos.

Já passou. Para o ano há mais! Ficam as fotografias, as lembranças e alguns presentes. Os meus já estão a dar frutos!

Our Christmas is always a great time! The journey up to the Alentejo is long, and this year we drove under the constant threat of heavy rain. On the way we stopped to pick my sister up and there we went again. It wasn't as cold as in the previous years, but the fireplace was kept on all the time.

Gathering with people we only see once a year always feels very good and preparing Christmas Eve makes everyone smile.

It's over now. We can't wait for next year. For the time being we have the photos, the memories and some gifts. My presents are already becoming something!

Flocos de neve /Snow flakes

Ontem bem cedo, ainda estava eu a despachar-me para sair de casa, recebo um sms da minha irmã que dizia algo como "Ainda estás em casa? Traz-me uns naperons de papel daqueles pequeninos, se estiverem à mão, se faz favor". Nem me questionei sobre o que andaria a inventar. Peguei em naperons de diversos tamanhos, coloquei-os num emvelope e enfiei-os dentro da mala. Umas horas depois, já em Lisboa, foi a primeira coisa que lhe entreguei, seguido de um cartucho de biscoitos :-))). Escusado será dizer que não me respondeu quando perguntei para que os queria...

Mais tarde, já em Faro, descobri o que ela andava a fazer: Flocos de Neve inspirados no Design Sponge!

Yesterday morning, before I left home to work I received a text message from my sister saying something like: "Are you sstill at home? If so, could you, please, bring me some small paper doilies?". I didn't even ask why she wanted them, and I just put some of different sizes in an envelope and put it in my bag. A few hours later, when I met her in Lisbon this was the first thing I gave her, followed by a small pack of biscuits :-))) When I asked her what she was going to make, she didn't want to tell me...

Later in the evening, back in Faro, I finnally found what she had been up to: Snow flakes inspired by Design Sponge!

Presentes de Natal # Christmas gifts

No ano passado por esta altura já tinha feito uns quantos quilos (sim quilos!!!) de areias para oferecer, mas este ano não sei porquê só hoje comecei nestas andanças... Uma parte já está, depois de amanhã há mais.

A receita tirei-a do mais recente livro da Bimby. Tentei encontrá-la online e a mais parecida é esta: "Cantucci"

At this time but last year I had alredy baked several kilos (yes, I really mean kilos ) of butter biscuits which I offered as Chirstmas presents. This year I hadn't started until today.

Part of if it's done. After tomorrow I'll have another go on them.

The recipe was taken form the Thermomix most recent book. I tried to find it online and the most similar one is this: "Cantucci".

Já o disse aqui que uma das coisas que mais gosto nesta história dos blogs é andarmos de um lado para o outro a descobrir as maravilhas que por aí há. I've already mentioned here that one of the things I enjoy the most in a blog is the chance to find what is going on around the world and see how gifted people are. Sometime ago through HotSpot I found Pinga Amor, and today I knocked on a Happy Hour door. Among other beautiful things there you can find these pretty little boxes, which are available at the Loja das Maquetas, in Lisbon. I wanted to know more about them, so I rang and here's the information available:

Carteiras viajantes # Travelling clutches

É giro saber que as nossas peças vão para longe. Esta seguiu para Londres e depois viajará para Amsterdão. :-)

It's nice to know that what we make travels around. This clutch went to a client in London, who's moving soon to Amterdam. :-)

Sunday stash # twenty two

Comprei este livro para oferecer no Natal, mas chegou-me ligeiramente danificado e como tal tive de alterar os planos, pois não quero arriscar uma nova encomenda tão próxima da data da oferta. Fico eu com ele! (nada perdido...)

Quanto aos tecidos trouxe-os da Dot Quilts, aquando da minha ida a Lisboa. Nesse dia a loja estava cheia e o pouco tempo que lá estive foi recheado de momentos simpáticos :-D

I ordered this book to offer as a Chirstmas present but as I was going through it I found that it was a bit damaged and now it's a bit late to risk another online purchase. I had to change plans and I'll keep the book for me.

Regarding the fabrics I bought them from Dot Quilts, when I last went to Lisbon. That day the shop was full and I had a nice time while I was there :-D

Viver no campo # Living in the country

Quando se vive no campo não é difícil encontrar cenários saídos de uma realidade quase inexistente para quem nasce, cresce e está na cidade, desde as paredes caiadas, à argola que outrora serviu para prender o burro os pequenos objectos que ainda fazem parte do dia-a-dia multiplicam-se à nossa volta. Neste alpendre, atrás das paredes brancas ainda existe um monte de caixotes de madeira, que de vez em quando ganham nova vida; o banco de madeira ainda é o local preferido de todos onde, no Verão, os serões são passados a conversar e o escadote já não serve para apanhar fruta ou subir ao depósito da água, pois cessou funções e foi substituido por um de alumínio.

O único elemento estranho aqui é mesmo o artifício feito com rodelas de papel - muito visto na internet e em alguns livros, mas este tem a particularidade de ter sido feito a partir de antigos guias de Lisboa. Servirá, certamente, para decorar alguns presentes de Natal.

When you're living in the countryside it is not difficult to find settings out of an unexisting reality for someone who lives in the city - from white washed walls, to the ring where before the donkey used to be tied, there are still many of these objects around us. Behind the white walls of this porch one can find old fruit wooden boxes that once in a while get a new life, the wooden bench is our favourite place to chat during the warm Summer evenings and the wooden ladder hanged on the wall is no longer useful to reach the highest branches of the trees as it has been replaced by a more modern one.

The only strange object here is the paper garland  - nothing new as these garlands are very popular and easy to find on the internet, but this one was made out of old Lisbon guides. I'm sure we will use them to decorate some Christmas presents.

Que quentinho! Warm and cosy

Agora que já terminei este e já desmanchei o outro, fiquei com vontade de fazer mais golas.

Já está a uso, relativamente aos cachecóis vulgares apresenta várias vantagens:

- não ficam pontas penduradas a encalhar na mala

- as mesmas pontas não ocupam espaço dentro do casaco, consequentemente já não tenho aquala sensação de "perú recheado" :-)))

- facilmente cabe na mala

Informação adicional: usei dois novelos de lã e um pouco do terceiro, agulhas número 6 (embora o recomendado seja 5-5,5)

Now that I've finished this and unravelled the other one I feel like I want to make more of these neckwarmers.

I'm wearing it and compared to ordinary wool scarves has got several advantages:

- as it's not long the ends don't hang and don't mess up with anything - especially handbags!

- again, as it is much shorter, I don't feel like a "stuffed turkey" :-)))

- it fits easily in my handbag

Aditional information: I used two skeins of wool plus a bit of the third skein and needles size 6 (although the recommended was 5-5,5)

Sketch books

O desafio foi lançado e a mana agarrou-o: desenhar o almoço de ontem!!! (vão até lá e vejam que desenhos bonitos se fazem por cá)Ela ainda tentou que eu fosse atrás, mas senti-me inibida e as páginas do meu sketchbook ficaram em branco.

No entanto, durante as quatro horas (!!!!!) que passei, hoje, nas urgências do hospital à espera de ser atendida não tive outro remédio a não ser pegar no caderno que anda sempre comigo e começar a rabiscar - sem tricot, sem costura e sem nenhum livro ou revista para ler, tive de arranjar maneira de passar o tempo...

The challenge was launched and my sister grabbed it: to draw yesterday's lunch!!! (click here and check what wonderfull sketchers we have). She wanted me to do the same, but I didn't feel comfortable and the pages of my sketchbook remained blank.

But today, while waiting for four hours at the hospital for an appointment, I didn't have choice and I had to scribble something - this was the only way I found to make useful my time ( I didn't have neither any book or magazine, nor my knitting)

Tweeds & Plaids

O fim-de-semana foi longo mas menos produtivo do que seria esperado. Um acidente, com alguma chapa amassada trocou-nos as voltas e andei enrolada com polícia, seguradoras etc, etc... um maçada :-S Ainda assim consegui terminar uma encomenda e fazer algumas pregadeiras e bandoletes com as fazendas que tenho adquirido nas últimas semanas.

Despite the long weekend we didn't produce as much as we first intended. A car accident messed up with our plans and Ive been involved in police reports, insurance claims and so on... :-S Nevertheless I managed to finish a pending order and make some brooches and hair bands with the tweeds I bought over the last few weeks.

Mais Lisboa

Não nos cansamos de Lisboa, nem de fotografar cada instante que passamos lá (e digo "lá" porque hoje estou mais a sul). Ir ao Kaffeehaus é uma verdadeira tentação: os pratos e doces são apetitosos, e as mesas são um lugar de expressão irresistível! Basta pedir o giz e deixar a mão fazer o resto. Desta vez o apetite resultou na mesa posta antes de nos trazerem o menu :)

We never get enough of Lisbon and we take pictures of everything there ("there" because today I'm a bith south...). To visit the Kaffeehaus is a true temptation: from the main courses to the desserts. What about the tables? Just ask for a piece of chalk and let your hand do the rest. This time I set the table up before the the arrival of the menu :-)

Lisboa # Lisbon

Apesar de não ser assim tão longe, já há algum tempo que não estava (ir e voltar no mesmo dia não conta) em Lisboa e mesmo com o tempo chuvoso, onde estivemos menos tempo, foi em casa.

Despite not being that far it's been a while since I last was in Lisbon - a return trip on the same day doesn't count! - and although it was rainny we didn't stay long at home.

A curiosidade matou o gato # Curiosity killed the cat

A viagem de ida foi passada a dormir e a de regresso a tricotar.

Os dias foram passados na rua.

Um dos serões foi passado a trabalhar!

O resultado de tantas tirinhas cortadas está à vista - elásticos para o cabelo- e quem os quiser adquirir basta dirigir-se a uma das lojas Piri-Piri, em Lisboa(em Campo de Ourique on a Av. João XXI)

I slept all the way to Lisbon and knitted all the journey back.

The days were spend wondering around.

One of the evenings was spent working.

The result of so many fabric scraps is this - elastic ties for children's hair - and if you want to buy them, hyou just have to go to one of the Piri - Piri shops in Lisbon (either in Campo de Ourique or in Av. João XXI)

Pequenos projectos # Small projects

 Do que me restou da hora do almoço fui dar uma volta a pé e aproveitei para tirar umas fotos ao que estou a tricotar. A outra gola que estava a fazer ficou em stand-by e acho que a vou desmanchar, pois tem alguns enganos que os olhos mais atentos não deixam escapar.

O meu primeiro projecto de tricot foi um cachecol azul que intercalava carreiras de liga com carreiras de meia e fi-lo deveria ter uns oito ou nove anos - já não me lembro quem me ensinou a fazer tricot, se a mãe, se uma das avós - durante umas férias de Natal. Tenho pena de não saber onde se perdeu.

De vez em quando faço pequenas coisas - há três ou quatro anos fiz ponchos para oferecer às minhas amigas no Natal - mas nunca me aventurei em grandes projectos. Qualquer dia faço umas meias para experimentar!

I went for a walk at lunch time and I took some picture of what I've been knitting. I think I'm going to unravell the other neck warmer I was knitting because there are a few stiches which are not correct and I can't stand looking at them.

I knitted my first wool scarf when I was eight or nine years old during a Christmas school holidays - I cannot remember wether it was my mother or my grandmother who taught me how to knitt - but unfortunately I don't know where I lost it...

Once in a while I make small projects - about three or four years ago my friends got ponchos for Christmas - and I've never tried anything big. Near in the future I'll have a try on knitting socks!

Fim-de-semana em cheio # Wonderful weekend

Do fim-de-semana vim cheia de novidades! Amigos; encontros casuais (é estranho ouvir de alguém de quem só conhecemos os nomes: "eu conheço-vos!":-)); sitios novos aos quais irei regressar (bem, a mana pode lá ir a qualquer hora, pois fica, literalmente, do outro lado da rua); na bagagem material novinho em folha - algum que já comecei a dar uso, e outro que vou ficar a namorar durante algum tempo antes de lhe deitar a tesoura.

This was a great long weekend! I met some friends; I met people who I only knew from the other side of the screen (it feels weird to hear from someone we've never seen before something like "I know you!:-)); I visited new places where, for sure, I'll be back (well my sister can go there anythime she wants as it is literally accross the road!); And in my luggage I brought some brand new materials - with the yarn I've started a new knitting project and the fabrics will have to wait until I decide what to make.

Fim-de-semana prolongado # A long weekend

Nem acredito que tenho pela frente quatro dias de descanso...quer dizer, descanso do trabalho de escritório! O fim-de-semana vai ser para matar saudades da mana, mas como as viagens são longas há que aproveitar todos os minutos, por isso estive a preparar material para levar na bagagem.

Agora, deixem-me ir fazer a mala, pois a alvorada é às cinco da manhã. Beijinhos e até para a semana!... ou talvez mais cedo :-)

I cannot believe that a four days weekend is waiting for me! I'm visiting my sister and as the journey is a bit long I've been preparing some stuff to take with me so I can do some work on the way there.

Carteiras # Purses

Se a minha irmã gosta de as fazer, eu gosto de lhes desenhar o conteúdo. Não faço isto com toda a gente, é óbvio, mas acho interessante estudar o que se traz numa mala ou nos bolsos, e por isso, de vez em quando peço a quem está comigo para me mostrar as suas malas e fotografo-as com a caneta e as aguarelas no meu caderno.

A mala da minha irmã é, normalmente, divertida: tem cada coisa lá dentro ... só ela!

Estes desenhos já têm algum tempo, mas novos estão a caminho! Assim que tiver um tempinho, passo-os no scanner e coloco-os aqui.

If my sister likes to make them, I like to draw what they carry. It is obvious that I don't do that with everybody's purse, but I find interesting to look at what people bring in their bags or their pockets, so, once in a while I ask whomever is with me to show me their "secrets" and I take picture, not with a camera, but with my pencils and  watercolours into my sketchbook.

Usually my sister's bag is great fun: you cannot imagin what she brings in it... only her!

These two drawings are a bit old, but new ones are on their way. As sson as I have a bit of free time, I'll scan and post them here.

Sunday stash # twenty one

A mãe tem estado a preparar matreriais para uns workshops que vai dar esta semana, e achei tão giro o conjunto de cores de feltro que resolvi fotografar.

My mother has been preparing some material for a couple of workshops she'll be doing this week, and the felt colours looked so nice piled up that I decided to take a picture.

Eu não disse que o terminava? # Didn't I tell you that I would finish it?

Apesar de hoje ter saído do trabalho mais tarde do que o habitual, assim que cheguei nem entrei em casa e fui direitinha ao atelier. A máquina só parou agora, porque as costas começaram a reclamar, mas consegui terminar a parte de cima do quilt. Para a parte de trás, ainda vou ter de ir comprar ou umas bolinhas ou uns quadradinhos. O que vos parece?

Despite having left the office later than usual, as soon as I got home I went straight to my sweing room. The sewing machine has just stopped and that only happened because my back started to complain and also because the quilt top was finished. For the back I have to buy some polkadotted fabric or gingham. What do you think?

O terceiro quilt # My third quilt

Hoje - quer dizer, ontem - cheguei cedo do trabalho e como vinha cheia de genica resolvi levar para a frente um projecto que estava pendente há alguns dias. Como não gostei muito (acho que isto se está a tornar comum...) do que fiz inicialmente, desmanchei um pouco do que estava feito, acertei os blocos, acrescentei-os e, à medida que foram ficando prontos colei-os à parede para ter uma ideia do produto final. Amanhã - isto é, mais logo - espero acabar a parte de cima deste quilt.

Depois de pronto quem ficará com ele? O primeiro foi para o F., com o segundo ficou a mana; este ainda não sei...

Today - I mean, yesterday - I got home early from work and as I was feeling very energetic I decided to take forward another pending project. As I didn't like (this is becoming repetitive...) what I first made, I unmade it, trimmed the blocks, added some fabric and as I finished each of them, I stuck them on the wall to see how they would look like together. Tomorrow - well, later today - I hope to finish this quilt top.

After is finished who's going to keep it? I made the first for F. and the second for my sister; this one, I still don't know..

Espírito de Natal # Christmas mood

Como não tenho tido muito tempo para produzir nada de jeito (o que mostrei nos posts abaixo estão em fase de produção, não estão completos, or isso não contam) e já está frio no atelier, tenho passado algumas horas a ver o que se faz por aí. O tema não é novo, mas há sempre forma de o renovar: Coroas de Natal, que nesta época tanto podem dar as boas vindas se colocadas numa porta, ser penduradas sobre a lareira (para quem a tem...), colocadas como centro de mesa ou qualquer outra hipótese que a imaginação ditar.

As I haven't had much time to make anything (what I've shown in the posts below are not finished projects so they don't count) and in the evening our crafts room is cold, I've been spending quite a long time wondering around other people's blogs. The theme is not new, but it can always be renewed: Christmas Wreaths which can welcome people if hanged on a door, above your mantelpiece (if you have a fireplace...)or as a centre piece on a table. It's up to you.

Não tenho a certeza... # I'm not sure wether...

...se gosto deste trabalho, ou não.

É um trabalho cheio de indecisões.

- como já disse ainda não me decidi se gosto dele, ou não;

- ainda não sei o que vai ser - um pequeno quilt, é o fim mais provável;

- já tenho os hexágonos quase todos - incluindo mais cinco "rosetas" - e não queria desistir.

Pode não vir a servir para nada de concreto, mas consegui treinar o processo de paper piecing (um pouco aldrabado*, confesso)

*em vez de usar papel para os moldes, usei entretela (sem cola) grossa e cortei quadrados de tecido os quais moldei aos hexágonos e os quais vão ser aparados no final.

...I like this, or not.

I'm not very determined about this piece:

- as I've mentioned above I cannot make up my mind wether I like it or not;

- I still don't know what I'm going to make with it - a small quilt is on my mind.

- I've got all he hexagons - including five central pieces - and I don't want to give up finishing it.

It may be completely useless, but I manage to practice the paper piecing technique (well, kind of... as I used an interfacing material to make the hexagons and I cut squares which will be trimmed in the end).

Hoje é dia de tricot # Today is knitting day

Lembram-se deste cachecol que comecei antes da Primavera? Pois é, o tempo aqueceu e eu não o cheguei a terminar e agora que o calor teima em não se ir embora, tenho de o acabar antes que o frio ataque. Já não falta muito, pois o planeado é fazê-lo tipo gola e arranjar um botão bonito para o fechar. O problema é que me engano tantas vezes no bago de arroz que são mais as voltas que desmancho do que as que avanço...

Remember this scarf I started knitting before the Spring? Then the weather warmed up and I haven't finished it. I must finish it before the cold temperatures reach us. There are only a "few rows" outstanding as I want to make it as a neckband to which I'll sew a nice button - when I find it! The problem is that for every row that I knit I have to undo another two rows...I'm making mistakes all the time...

The handmade co. : Christmas swap

Já há alguns anos que não participava em nenhuma troca de grupo, mas este ano apeteceu-me voltar a fazê-lo. Esta está quase pronta a ser enviada, faltando apenas um dos elementos, o qual ainda não tive oportunidade de adquirir. Vai ter de ficar para amanhã...

It's been a few years since I last participated in a swap, but this year I felt like I wanted to do it again. This one is almost ready to be sent and there's only one thing outstanding. I'm going to try to get it tomorrow...

Sábado à tarde # Saturday afternoon

Esta tarde tivemos no atelier uma demonstração de scrapbooking e para o lanche preparei um bolo de iogurte cuja receita encontrei, por mero acaso, esta semana. Garanto-vos: é delicioso!!!!

This afternoon we had a scrapbooking workhop in our study and for tea I baked a yoghurt cake, which recipe I found this week. It's delicious!!!!

E para terminar o dia, tivemos uma surpresa muito simpática: um e-mail vindo de terras de Sua Majestade de alguém que ao folhear uma revista antiga nos encontrou. É tão bom receber estes mimos. Obrigada, G!!!

And to finish the day we had a very nice surprise from someone living in England who, going through an old magazine, found a photo of us and send us an e-mail. It feels good to be spoiled like this. Thank you, G!!!

Spring cleaning

Se os dias, normalmente já são curtos, agora que o sol se esconde mais cedo, nem parece que existiram. Consequência disto é o facto de o atelier se tornar gelado e não há aquecedor que lhe sirva, por isso enquanto me adapto às condições o ritmo de trabalho abranda e aproveito para fazer outras coisas. Este fim-de-semana as arrumações e limpezas estiveram na ordem de trabalhos.

I always feel that the days are not long enough and now that the sun hides earlier, they seem to be even shorter. As a consequence our study gets cold and there isn't any type of heating that can help,so while I get used to this conditions I tend to slow down a bit and I do other things. This weekend was dedicated to cleaning and clearing: a good spring clean before the Winter arrives.

These bibs, avalilable here, have been ready for a few days, but only now I had the chance to take photographs.

Purple winter clutch

A pouco e pouco elas vão aparecendo. Cortadas e semi-cosidas tenho outras três em preto+branco, castanho+beije e castanho+um pouco de laranja.

Bit by bit they are starting to come up. I've got another three already taylored and half sewn: black+white, brown+beije and brown with a bit of orange.

Decorações de Natal # Christmas ornaments

Este ano resolvi participar numas quantas trocas de decorações de Natal e hoje comecei a trabalhar nisso, já que o prazo de envio é o final do mês e daí até ao Natal o tempo passa a correr. Os níveis de inspiração estão um pouco em baixo, por isso fui procurá-la onde sei que existem coisas bonitas, ou seja, neste livro que trouxe no ano passado de Londres. É realmente uma delícia para os olhos e para a alma.

This year I've signed up for several Christmas ornaments' swaps and today I started making mine as they have to be sent by the end of November, and from there until Christmas time flies. Today my level of inspiration is close to zero, so I searched for inspiration where I knew I could find beautiful things, which means this book I bought last year in London. It is really delicious for your eyes and for your soul.
