Guess what

Ontem, ao chegar a casa tinha um pequeno presente enviado pela mana :-) Estes dois tecidos já estão predestinados a algo que temos em mente há algum tempo. Alguém se candidata a dar um passo em frente para nos dizer o que deles vai nascer? Um pequeno presente - no mosaico- já está preparado a quem acertar :-)))

Yesterday, when I got home I had a little present from my sister :-) These two fabrics are for somenting we have in mind for a while. Who's the first one to tell us what we are about to make? We have a small gift - shown in the mosaic - for the first person to give us the right answer :-)))

Bem, parece-me que vou ter de ceder à pressão das pistas.

Chitas # Portuguese cotton fabrics

Há cerca de duas semanas a mãe foi passear e, de passagem por Alcobaça, não resistiu a trazer-nos umas chitas. Estes desenhos, segundo a informação que lhe foi dada, não são bem os tradicionais, mas uma adaptação. Os genuínos têm barras mais largas e motivos mais grados - são maravilhosos! - mas as coisas que fazemos pedem estampados mais pequenos, por isso estes foram os eleitos.

A couple of weeks ago my mother went for a tour and passing Alcobaça she couldn't resist bringing us some chitas (chita is a traditional portuguese cotton fabric with some specific prints). These prints, according to some information she was given, are not the most traditional, as the original ones have wider stripes and larger images - flowers and birds, mainly. Our crafs ask for smaller prints, then my mother chose these ones

Estou de greve # I'm on strike

Por vezes tenho de me impor uma pausa, e é isso que vou fazer hoje. Bem, mais ou menos...pois estar de greve não quer dizer que fique sem fazer nada em frente à televisão; vou antes dedicar-me a terminar um dos bordados da Agulha não Pica que comecei há uns dias.

Sometimes I have to make a pause, and that's what I planned for this evening. Well, sort of...as staring at the television is far from being my idea of  taking a break; Instead I'm going to finish one of the embroidery kits from Agulha não Pica which I started a few days ago.

Sketching...

Ainda ontem, e já quase no final da tarde, apercebi-me da existência de um senhor que, sentanto na esplanada na nossa frente, rabiscava qualquer coisa num caderno grande. Sem que se apercebesse fui espreitar e fiquei a ver :-) No final fui falar com ele, contei-lhe da existência dos Urban Sketchers, do "núcleo" português e de algumas actividades desenvolvidas. Ainda com algum receio, perguntei-lhe se podia tirar fotos ao seu caderno e além de me ter dado consentimento, ainda me mostrou todos os seus desenhos. Acreditem, que com isso ganhei o dia!!!

Yesterday almost at sunset, I saw a gentleman who was sitting on a terrace opposite to us, scribbling something on a sketchbook. Without being noticed I went around him and stood there watching :-) After he finished I came to him and I told him about the Urban Sketchers, the Portuguese "branch" and some of the activities developed by these groups. Still a bit cautious I asked him if I could take a picture of his drawings and not only he allowed me to do this, but also showed me the whole sketchbook.

Believe me, this made my day!!!

Cacela Velha

Este é o local perfeito, onde é impossível não se desejar ter uma pequena casa de férias. Tem a designação de aldeia, mas é tão pequenina que não sei se chega a ser mais do que um lugar: uma praça, três ou quatro ruas, casas térreas, três restaurantes e, o indispensável cemitério da aldeia. É bastante frequentado por turistas, especialmente holandeses e espanhóis, e se, normalmente tem muita gente, hoje estava repleto. A paisagem é magnífica, quer para o lado da serra quer para o lado do mar. Infelizmente as minhas fotografias não fazem jus ao lugar, por isso deixo-vos o desafio para lá irem pessoalmente.

 This is the perfect place to own a holiday home. It's considered a village, but it is so small that I would call it just a place: a square, three or four streets, small houses, three restaurants, and of course the village cemitery. It is mainly visited by tourits especially dutch and spanish, and if usually is crowded, today it was over crowded. The views are astonishing both looking at the hills and to the sea. Unfortunately my photos are not a spot of the real place, so I invite all to come over and look for yourselves.

Post Scriptum

Daqui a umas horas estaremos em Cacela Velha para participar no Mercadinho de Primavera. É a primeira vez que lá vamos, pelo que não temos quaisquer expectativas de como irá correr. Não sabemos quem vai lá estar nem que tipo de artesanato haverá para venda.

O tempo parece estar a nosso favor, e se o dia estiver claro a vista de mar a perder-se no horizonte é do melhor que nos pode ser oferecido. Voltaremos para contar como foi, e com algumas fotos do evento.

In a couple of hours we'll be in Cacela Velha for the Spring Crafts Fair. This is our first time there, so we didn't create any expectations on how it's going to be. We don't know neither who's going, nor what sort of crafts will be displayed.

The weather seems to be on our side and if the day is clear, the viw over the ocean is the best we can get from there. We'll be back later to tell you how it was and, hopefully with some pictures of this event.

Vou feirar # I'm going to a fair

Já imenso tempo que os nossos cartões se acabaram e até hoje ainda não tinha feito nem mais, nem diferentes. Aproveitando o facto de no próximo Domingo ir "feirar" e de ter alterado o aspecto do blog fiz cartões novos.

It's been a while now that our business cards have finished and until today I hadn't had the chance to make neither new ones, nor different ones. Considering that next Sunday I'll be attending a fair and the fact that we've changed the look of the blog, I made some new cards.

Sobre as redes sociais # About social networks

Muito se fala, debate e discute sobre o bom e o mau das redes sociais, entre as quais está o Facebook, uma das que utilizamos com mais frequência. Até ao momento nada de negativo tenho a apontar e ultimamente tem sido uma ferramenta indispensável para reencontrar algumas das antigas colegas do Colégio - uma emoção, acreditem! A página serve para divulgar o que vamos fazendo por aqui e dá, muitas vezes, para por a conversa em dia com quem está longe.

E convosco? O que se passa? Usam as redes sociais? Têm boas ou más experiências? Gostaríamos que partilhassem connosco e com quem por aqui passa.

Everywhere we go the social networks are discussed: are they good? or bad? among them is Facebook which we frequently use. So far we have nothing negative to point out and  for me it has been an important tool  in finging old school friends - believe me that the last couple of months have been a roller coaster of emotions! In our page we spread the word about what we've been making and sometimes we chat with friends who are far away.

Com a Primavera vêm, incondicionalmente, as flores: grandes, pequenas, delicadas ou exuberantes; umas mais perfumadas que outras - já falei aqui pela paixão que nutro por frésias e por laranjeiras em flor, não falei? - em jarras, canteiros ou a cobrir os campos - mal posso esperar que chegue Abril ou Maio para ir ver o Baixo Alentejo coberto de branco, amarelo e roxo.

E porque não usá-las ao peito, no cabelo, nas nossas malas e carteiras? Sinceramente, nós não conseguimos viver sem elas!

E é com este espírito fresco, leve e solto que partilho algumas das flores que vejo por aí e que me deixam a sonhar.

Along with Spring we cannot avoid flowers: big, small, delicate or cheerful; some are more scented than others - I have already mentioned my passion for fresias and orange blooming, haven't I? - in vases, beds or spread over the fields - I can't hardly wait for April or May to watch the Alentejo covered in yellow, white and purple.

And why not to wear them on your clothes, hair or purse? Honnestly, we couldn't live without them!!! And taking advange on this fresh, free and light mood I want to share with you some of the most beautiful flowers that make me dream.

Quando este post foi escrito ainda não tinha recebido permissão para usar as fotos da Claudia, entretanto a resposta ao meu e-mail chegou e eis que aqui mostro estas flores bem diferentes das anteriores mas igualmente maravilhosas.

Este centro comercial gigantesco nasceu nos Estados Unidos, mas acaba de inaugurar um escritório na Alemanha, e para celebrar o acontecimento está a promover a "Semana Europeia 2010". Foi criado um selo e um link onde estão concentradas todas as lojas que se identifiquem como sendo europeias. Espreitem e vejam o que de melhor se produz no "velho continente"

Quando não se tem, inventa-se! E foi isso que fiz esta tarde para fotografar algumas das pregadeiras que tenho andado a fazer. Ainda propus à "Senhora C." que fosse minha modelo, mas ela sorriu e continuou a andar :-)))

When you don't have exactly what you need the best option is to improvise! And that's what I've been doing this afternoon to shoot some of the corsages I've been making. I proposed one of my old neighbours to model for me, but she walked away giggling :-)))

Flores # Flower corsages

Não sei se é a Primavera, se é o odor a frésias de manhã ou a flor de laranjeira ao final do dia, ou qualquer outra razão desconhecida, mas chegada esta altura do ano tenho sempre um "ataque floral". Não, não estou a falar de espirros, pois esses acompanham-me o ano inteiro, mas da vontade com que fico de fazer flores. Este ano não é excepção e hoje estive a fazer algumas que estão quase prontas para as fotografar.

Gosto delas grandes, exuberantes e coloridas - alegres, como as estações quentes que se avizinham. Pessoalmente uso-as durante todo ano: no cabelo, nos casacos e blusas, à cintura... Fazem-me feliz nos dias cinzentos e transmitem frescura nos dias de sol.

I don't know if it's the "Spring effect", the smell of fresias in the morning or the orange bloom in the evening, or any other misterios reason, but when it gets to this time of the year I always suffer from a "flower attack". No, I'm not reffering to any type of allergies, but I do really get into "flower making mood".

This year hasn't been different and today I made some which are almost finished and ready to be photographed.

I like them big, flashy and colourful - happy as Spring and Summer.

Personally I wear them throughout the year: in my hair, in my coats, cardigans and t-shirts, in the waistline... They make me happy on grey moody days and bring out freshness on sunny days.

Obrigada pelas mensagens e e-mails que nos têm enviado acerca do novo aspecto do blog, não só com elogios, mas também a oferecer ajuda para as pequenas alterações que ainda queremos fazer.

A mudança era, há muito, desejada, e em jeito de celebração das 100.000 visitas demos o passo que faltava. O layout ainda não é o definitivo, pois há margens que precisam ser ajustadas, temos ainda de estudar o tamanho das fotografias, as cores e as fontes também são capazes de sofrer mudanças.

Os conhecimentos que temos na matéria não são muitos, mas com a colaboração do nosso amigo Google, penso que conseguiremos atingir os objectivos. Se, entretanto, isto desaparecer tudo é porque ... houve asneira! (não, isso não vai acontecer!)

Thank you for all the messages and e-mails that you've been sending for the last couple of days about the new look of our blog, not only with compliments but also offering to help us with the adjustments that we need to make.

We've been thinking about this change for a long time and to celebrate our 100.000 visits we decided to give it a go. The layout will suffer some changes as the margins need to be adjusted, the size of the pictures is not right, the colours and the fonts may also change.

Our IT skills are not at the level we wished, but we are leaning on our friend Google to give us a hand -I' m sure he won't let us down. If, for any instance, the blog disappears is because ...we screwed up! (no, that is not going to happen!)

As prometidas mudanças # The promised changes

O serão tem sido passado a fazer as tão prometidas e desejadas mudanças no blog. O resultado ainda não é o definitivo, pois o processo está a levar mais tempo do que o desejado: a distribuição das colunas não está como o que queríamos - com certeza enganei-me na edição do html; o espaço entre as mesmas também necessita ser ajustado; o tamanho das fotografias... prevejo ainda muito trabalho pela frente

I spent the evening going through the chenges I've been aiming to do for the last months. This is not the final result because it is taking longer than what I first expected: the distribution of the three columns is not as we wished - I'm sure I did something wrong when I edited the html code; the space between the columns also need to be adjusted; the size of the pictures... still a lot of work to do...

Amêndoas doces # Dessert almonds

Desde que aprendemos a fazer estas amêndoas, há mais ou menos dez anos, que o ritual se repete nas semanas que antecedem a Páscoa: compra-se a amêndoa com pele, enche-se o cesto das compras de pacotes de açúcar, "O" tacho sai do armário e a colher de pau é colocada em ponto estratégico. Desde então nunca mais comprámos amêndoas doces - praticamente só comemos as que fazemos.

Antes que me peçam a receita, aqui fica ela:

Em quantidades iguais: amêndoa com pele, açúcar branco e água

Leva-se ao lume e deixa-se o açúcar atingir um ponto de quase caramelo. Retira-se do fogão e mexe-se energicamente até adquirirem este aspecto.

Every Easter since we've learned how to make these almonds it's like a ritual: we buy the almonds, fill our shopping basket with sugar, "THE" pan comes out of the bupboard and the wooden spoon is always ready to take action. For more or less ten years that we don't buy any dessert almond as we only eat the ones we make :-))

Before you start asking for the recipe, her it is:

The same quantity of almonds, sugar and water

Stir everything in a pan, and leave it until sugar almost becomes caramel. remove from heat and stir it energetically until you get this look.

Achados # Treasures

Nunca vos acontece procurar por algo durante muito tempo e não encontrar o que querem, e como que por magia o que tanto almejam está mesmo em frente aos vossos olhos? A nós ocorre-nos mais do que o desejado, mas a surpresa e a alegria de conseguir o que tanto procurámos enche-nos de sorrisos duradouros. Foi mesmo isso que aconteceu no Sábado: quatro carrinhos de linhas, quase intactos esperaram por nós semi-escondidos, entre outras velharias, até quase ao final do dia, momento em que lhes pusemos os olhos em cima e os trouxemos connosco.

Uma pequena conquista, mas muito saborosa e bem mais gratificante que os ter comprado no e-bay.

We've been looking for old wooden spools for ages and finding these was a magic moment for us! We found these last Saturday among old stuff in a box lying on the floor: they waited for us all day!!!

For us this was a little treat, much better than bying them on e-bay!

Moldes # Patterns

Os moldes já estão passados e prontos para dar forma aos tecidos que os esperam: um top e dois vestidos,cada peça para um tamanho diferente. Falta-me agora o tempo para os por em prática. Só sei que antes da Páscoa já têm de estar entregues :-))) Obrigações de "tia"/madrinha!!!

The patterns are ready to be used. From them I hope to make a top and a couple of dresses, each item in different sizes for three sweet little girls. Now, I need the time to make them. I only know that before Easter they have to be finished and delivered :-))) "Aunt"/Godmother's obligation!!!

Caravanas # Caravans

Ultimamente, por onde quer que ande, encontro caravanas tão apetecíveis que até fico com vontade de ter uma. Sinceramente, não sei o que faria com ela, pois aqui não me parece haver mercado para este tipo de estrutura - convenhamos que caravana de feira está no polo oposto ao destas!!!

Ao fundo da horta reside uma há anos, que legalmente não é minha, mas está lá há tanto tempo...o meu pai não deixa que lhe toquem, afinal tem dono - tem dono e com certeza alguns bichos não faltarão por lá, sendo que coelhos sabemos nós que existem, pois de vez em quando vê-mo-los a saltitar :-)))

Lately, wherever I surf the web, I see so many delightful caravans that I sometimes think I also want to have one of my own. Honestly I wouldn't know what to do with it, because I don't think we have market for this kind of structure - caravans like the ones we see at fairs are on the opposite side of these ones!!!!

At the bottom of our back yard there's one which is living there for yeeeaaaars, but it's not ours :-(... my father doesn't let us go near, after all it owned by someone else who asked him (those many years ago) to "park" it there - we know that it is inhabited, but not by its owners...rabbits may be, which we often see jumping around :-)))

Viver no campo # Living in the coountry

Uma das coisa boas de se viver no campo é ter mesmo "à mão de semear" coisas simples que, de outro modo, só uma ida à mercearia ou ao supermercado poderiam colmatar: chá príncipe, lúcia-lima (ou bela-luísa, como se diz por cá), menta ... e um limoeiro "gigante" . Já lhe perdi a conta aos anos, pois terá pelo menos tantos quantos eu... E se o limão é azedo, muitas coisas doces podem ser feitas com ele. Que tal umas receitas saborosas?

One of the good things of living in the country is that I only need to stretch my arm out to get what, in another way I would only get from the grocery or the supermarket:mint leaves, lemon grass, lemon verbena...and a "giant" lemon tree. I don't know how old this one is, but it must be at least the same age as I am.. And if this an acid fruit, there are thousands of sweet things that can be made with it. Would you fancy a few ones?

Saudade*

Recordo-me de, em miúda, ficar fascinada quando a minha mãe estendia as grandes folhas de moldes da Burda sobre a mesa, lhes colocavaa um papel vegetal por cima e começava a tirar os moldes do que, de seguida, ía fazer. Todas aquelas linhas de cores diferentes e que, na altura não faziam sentido, como que por magia se transformavam em peças de roupa que depois vestíamos com orgulho. O pior era a parte das provas, especialmente se a peça em questão tinha mangas, mas isso é assunto para outro post...

Mais tarde desvendei o mistério e era eu quem pedia para tirar os moldes: referência daqui, tamanho dali e eles surgiam nas folhas de papel.

Hoje estive a matar saudades desses tempos, mas desta vez quem vai costurar as peças de roupa sou eu. As "vitimas" das minhas experiências vão ser as do costume, a começar pela minha afilhada :-) Coincidentemente a mana, 300km mais a norte, também anda em experiências do mesmo género, mas por azar a máquina de costura avariou, pelo que os resultados só mais tarde serão visíveis :-(((

I remember, when I was a little girl seeing my mother spreading the big Burda pattern sheets on the table, put on some parchment and from there drwaing some lines which would be some outfit for us to wear. All those lines in different colours didn't make any sense. The worst part was when there were sleeves involved in this process, but that is something for another post...

Later, I've learned how to do this and I used to ask my mother if I could help her. Crossing references and sizes was no longer a mistery to me.

Today I went back all these years, but this time I'll be the one making the clothes. The "victims" of this new experience will be the usual ones, starting by my God daughter.

By coincidence, my sister, 300km north, is also going through the same experiences, but unfortunately her sewing machine broke down and the results will only be available in a few days...


Saudade: this is a very portuguese word which does not translate in any other language; missing someone or something is not even close to what saudade means. Once I read that saudade is the memory of something good which happened in the past...

Ida às compras # Shopping trip

Há pelo menos quatro anos que me habituei a ter na mala ou no carro um saco de pano para levar aquelas pequenas compras que, por vezes faço ao final do dia, ou mesmo para levar o almoço para o escritório. Confesso que o que me moveu a tomar esta decisão , além das razões ambientais, foi o facto de que quando viajo de combóio, não há nada que me irrite mais do que pessoas a remexer em sacos de plástico barulhentos às seis da manhã...

 Vejo-os de diversas marcas e já comprei alguns, mas daí a confeccioná-los, foi um longo caminho. Há uns dias descobri este molde e não hesitei em pô-lo em prática. O resultado, para já são três sacos de compras todos disponíveis na nossa loja.

It's been at least four years that I got used to have in my bag or in the car a cloth shopper for those little items I usually buy on the way home back from work, or just to carry my luch to the office. What made me take this decision, appart from environmental reasons, was the fact that when I travel by train I hate to hear the plastic bags noise on the seat next to mine, especially if it is six o'clock in the morning...

Many brands have them and I've already bought some for myself, but from that to make some of my own it has been a long way. A few days ago I found this pattern and I couldn't resist in making some. From the ones I made, there are three available at our shop.

Uma longa viagem # A long journey

Uma baleia / A whale

Confesso que estava um pouco receosa da viagem, pois o que o D. tem de meigo e amoroso, tem de traquina :-))) e sem os pais por perto, a coisa poderia ter dado para o torto. Mas não deu! Eu fui "armada" com um bloco, uma caixa de lápis e dois livros que lhe tinham oferecido na véspera. E foi no meio de muita conversa, desenhos e histórias que se passaram quatro horas sem grandes tropelias. No final ainda ganhei um beijo voluntário :-) (é que para lhe arrancar um beijo épreciso quase um ultimato!!!)

Prometi-lhe que publicaria aqui os desenhos e como "terceira tia" não posso faltar com a minha palavra.

O salvamento de um combóio numa tempestade/ Rescueing a train in a storm

I admit that I was a bit anxious with this journey - D. is a lovely boy, but he can also be a little devil :-))) and without his parents around it could have been dramatic. But it wasn't! In my hand luggage I had a drawing pad, some crayons and two books he had been offered the previous day. And between a story and a drawing and lots of talk we spent four pleasant hours without any trouble. In the end I won a free kiss:-)) (for him to kiss anyone is almost necessary tho threat him!!!)

I promissed him that I would post here his drawnings and as his "third aunt" I cannot renege.

O carro dos bombeiros / The fire brigade

Mimos # Sweet treats

Digam lá que não é bom chegar a casa e ter uns mimos destes à espera? A mim faz-me bem...aos olhos! Ainda assim, como a receita é nova e bastante simples, não posso deixar de a partilhar.

Queques de laranja

Ingredientes:

1 laranja

1 cenoura

3 ovos

1 iogurte natural (o copo servirá de medida para o açúcar e para a farinha)

3 medidas de farinha com fermento

3 medidas de açúcar

Parte-se a laranja em bocadinhos, sem descascar e tritura-se no liquidificador, até ficar em creme. Junta-se os ovos, o iogurte, o açúcar e a farinha e bate-se bem. No fim junta-se a cenoura ralada.

Leva-se ao forno em formas de queque ou madalenas.

Forno: 180ºC; Tempo: 35mn (aproximadamente)

This a new recipe (at home) and it's so simple I decided to share it with you.

Orange cupcakes

Ingredients:

1 orange

1 carrot

3 eggs

1 yoghurt (the cup will be your measure for the sugar and flour)

3 cups of sugar

3 cups of self raising flour

Cut the unpeeled orange in chunks and put it in your blender until is liquid and soft. Add the eggs, the yoghurt, the flower and the sugar. Beat it and make it fluffy. Add the grated carrot and divide the mixture in small cupcake tins.

Put them in the oven for aprox. 35 minutes at 180ºC

Não me posso esquecer de fazer um post sobre estes papéis de parede. Encontrei-os hoje na House & Garden e são, realmente maravilhosos.

I cannot forget to post about these wallpapers. I found them today while I was reading House & Garden and they are really beautiful!

Sketchers

Depois de uma semana a rever alhetas, betumagens - ou a ausência delas - perfis de transição, caixilhos e caixas de derivação, a subir e descer escadas num edifício ainda inabitável, soube-me bem ter sido arrastada pela mana, para um encontro de sketchers. O tempo não era convidativo mas mesmo assim fomos. Ela já é uma presença assídua nestes encontros, pelo que já conhece alguns dos participantes. Envergonhada, lá tirei o meu caderno da mala e encostei-me a um ferro no topo do Elevador de Santa Justa a rabiscar, desejando que ninguém viesse ver os meus riscos.

Desenhámos e a mana foi desenhada :-) Fiquei com um bichinho cá dentro, pois acima de tudo foi terapêutico e consegui esquecer o cansaço da semana.

After a week spent at a brand new building looking at minucious details that need to be corrected, it was very good to make a pause and be dragged by my sister to a sketch crawl in in the centre of Lisbon. Despite the stormy weather we went. She usually attends these events, therefore she already knows some of the sketchers. I'm a bit shy but as noone was looking I took my notebook out of my bag and drew some lines.

The funny thing was that we made our sketches and someone sketched my sister :-) I'm longing for the next event - it was very nice and I manage to forget the work.
